Coin Collecting Merit Badge - Early American Copper Coin Show

THIS MERIT BADGE WORKSHOP IS FREE.

Earn the Coin Collecting Merit Badge as part of the Early American Copper Coin Show sponsored by the Early American Coppers (EAC).

  • SATURDAY, MAY 18, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.  There is no cost for this merit badge workshop courtesy of the Early American Coppers.  The workshop is instructed by registered BSA merit badge counselors who are members of the EAC.
  • CHECK-IN beginning at 12:00 p.m.  Please arrive at least 30 minutes early.
  • The show runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday for Scouts who want to explore the show before or after the merit badge workshop.
  • PRE-REGISTRATION is REQUIRED.  No walk-ins.

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP...

  • Be familiar with the 2008 edition (or latest printing) of the Coin Collecting Merit Badge booklet. At the workshop, Scouts will review the requirements.
  • Collect and bring five examples of the same coin type, but in different conditions (for example, poor, good, fine, extra fine, uncirculated)) (Requirement 3).
  • Collect and bring five different Statehood or America the Beautiful program quarters you have acquired from circulation (Requirement 6). The dates do not have to be the same.
  • Collect and bring a type set of U.S. coins currently in circulation (Requirement 7). This type set must include one specimen each of the 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cent, 25 cent, 50 cent, and dollar coins. The dates do not have to be the same.
  • Collect and bring a date set of U.S. coins (Requirement 9d) or one of the other collections for requirement 9. The set for requirement 9d can be of any one denomination (1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents or 50 cents) and must include one (1) coin of every year, from the year the Scout was born through 2022. Any mint is acceptable. All coins must be of the same denomination.

WHAT TO BRING

  • A blue merit badge card signed by the Scoutmaster
  • Notepad
  • Pencil
  • The coins as identified in the BEFORE THE WORKSHOP section.  Please bring only the coin indicated and leave others at home.

AT THE WORKSHOP...

Everyone will learn a lot about collecting U.S. coins. Scouts will have the opportunity to see coins that circulated in Colonial and Revolutionary War times.  Scouts will complete other requirements during the workshop and then will be reviewed. All Scouts must accompanied by a parent or can attend with their unit under supervision of appropriate adult leadership.

All Scouts will receive a special coin collecting gift bag with supplies and coins including a slabbed coin, a buffalo nickel and a Large Cent that will be at least 166 years old.
