LVL 1 COPE/Climbing Facilitator training

September 28th 9am : 6pm – Camp Belzer

October 26th  10:00am to October 27th 5:00pm – Ransburg Scout Reservation

This course requires a minimum of 4 participants to run.  If we do not reach this minimum by the registration deadline, the course will be canceled.

CAC’s COPE & Climbing Committee is excited to offer this unique training opportunity to all adult leaders interested in learning more about COPE and Climbing Facilitation within the Crossroads of America Council.  This is a 3 day course and participants must be present for both event weekends. Course fee is $40.00 and covers meals and lodging.

The course is designed to cover the Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience (COPE) Instructor Foundations and Level I competencies. The course goal is to ensure that you can safely and effectively support a CAC Unit, District, and Council COPE, climbing and rappelling activities held at Ransburg Scout Reservations COPE course & Climbing Tower.  Training will be conducted following the BSA guidelines of “Climb On Safely”, “Belay On”, National Camp Accreditation Program (NCAP) Standards, and the CAC’s Climbing/Rappelling Policies and Procedures.

This Level I course is intended for BSA registered adults who meet the above prerequisites and are interested in learning and teaching the basics of climbing, & High COPE course operation at Ransburg Scout Reservation.  In addition, the course will cover the fundamentals of team building and facilitation, for use with both youth and adult participants.

Course Prerequisites

Participants must be 18+

• BSA Youth Protection Training 1

• BSA Climb On Safely 1

• BSA Hazardous Weather 1

• BSA Annual Medical and Health Form (Parts A & B) 2

• Read Chapters 2, 5-11, 13-14, and 27 in the BSA “Belay On” Manual 3

Be able to tie the following knots:

  • Bowline
  • Figure 8 on a bight
  • Figure 8 follow through
  • Double Fisherman’s Knot
  • Water knot
  • Clove hitch
  • Munter hitch
  • Munter hitch with mule and overhand (MMO)
  • Prussik
