Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) provides Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and transitioning Webelos leaders with the hands-on outdoor skills needed to successfully lead Scouts BSA and Venturing outdoor programs. This intensive overnight course combines instruction and practical experience in essential Scouting skills and is required training for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to become fully position trained.
Held at Camp Loud Thunder in Illinois City, Illinois, the course begins Friday evening and concludes Saturday evening. Participants will camp overnight in a self-pitched tent and spend the weekend learning and practicing the outdoor skills that form the foundation of the Scouts BSA program. The registration fee includes course materials, a Friday cracker barrel, Saturday breakfast and lunch, and a Dutch oven dinner.

- Campfire building and safety
- Ropes and knots
- Cooking
- Wood tools
- Plant identification
- Proper flag etiquette

Participants should bring a tent, sleeping gear, personal overnight supplies, weather-appropriate clothing, and Scouting America Annual Health & Medical Record Parts A & B. An overnight stay is required.
