Build a strong foundation in rifle safety, operation, and marksmanship with the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course. Hosted by the Illowa Council Range & Target Activities Committee, this one-day course is designed for anyone looking to develop safe firearm handling skills or complete the prerequisite for NRA Rifle Instructor training.
Throughout the day, participants will receive classroom instruction and hands-on range experience covering the essential knowledge and skills needed to safely use and maintain a rifle. Upon successful completion, participants will receive an NRA course certificate.
Participants will receive instruction in:
- NRA rules for safe gun handling
- Rifle parts and operation
- Ammunition selection and safety
- Shooting fundamentals
- Range rules and etiquette
- Shooting positions, including:
- Bench Rest
- Prone
- Sitting
- Standing
- Kneeling
- Basic rifle cleaning and maintenance

- 200 rounds of .22 Long Rifle ammunition

Please note: The NRA requires all NRA Rifle Instructor candidates to successfully complete the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course, regardless of previous shooting experience.

Registration is open through October 18, 2026, at midnight. Space is limited to 15 participants, so early registration is encouraged.
