National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an immersive and wide-ranging six-day outdoor experience for Scouting America youth programs.

The course will be conducted at the Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation by a trained staff of youth and adult leaders from around the Northeast Illinois Council. The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, KNOW, and DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW to apply what is learned. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a quest for the meaning of leadership.

REQUIRED HEALTH FORM: The Annual Health Form (Parts A, B, and C) is due by April 17. Contact Patty with questions.

PARENTS: Scouts must be at least 13 years old on the first day of the course to participate. Contact their Unit Leader if they are interested because only Scouts approved by their adult leaders may attend.

UNIT LEADERS: Contact Debi Geiger or Tony Giamis for the passcode to register Scouts.

STAFF: Approved Staff will be given their registration password after their interview.

REGISTRATION CLOSES: May 20, 2027 (11:59 PM). All Fees must be paid in full by then.

• $340 – Scout Early Discount Fee if registered and paid in full by April 30, 2027 (11:59 PM)
• $380* – Scout Regular Fee begins May 1.
• $80 – New Youth or Adult Staff
• No Fee – Returning Youth or Adult Staff

*The system will automatically increase a Scout's fee from $340 to $380 on May 1 if they have a balance due. Contact Debi with questions.

Items Included in Fee: Participants will be contacted to provide sizes for each item included with the fee.

TRANSPORTATION: The NYLT program includes transportation via Coach Bus Service to and from the Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation.  Details regarding the time and location are available in the ATTACHMENTS as well as the bus waiver if the Scout will be picked up directly at the end of the program.  

ORIENTATION: A mandatory "Parent & Participant" orientation is scheduled for April 17 at Camp Crown.  This orientation will begin at 9 am - a reminder will be sent to all registered Scouts and parents.  At this event, we will verify all medical and diet concerns, present the "week-in-a-glance" view for all parents and guardians, refresh the Scout Skills needed through the "Orientation Trail" with the participants and youth staff (8 stations), and answer all questions.  Scoutmasters are invited to attend.
