YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING
at TRAINING ACADEMY 2024

Senior Patrol Leader, Den Chief PLUS, Venture Leader, 
Sea Scout Leader, and OA (Order Of The Arrow) Training

 

Online pre-registration is closed. Walk Ins are welcome on Saturday, but seats are limited! Arrive early (7:30 am or later) to reserve one of the remaining spots.  Also, bring your lunch and some extra spending money. We will have a Snack Shack selling drinks and snacks, but no extra lunches. Required handbooks for Den Chief and SPL trainings may be available for purchase on the Midway from the Scout Shop; quantities are limited.  Limited quantities of patches may be available for purchase at Registration, too.

Training Academy is beckoning for you to prepare for your future leadership positions now by attending one of our excellent youth leadership classes.  Each full-day class offers a unique opportunity to learn from experienced instructors and work with other youth leaders. This FREE* training for leadership positions within your Troop, Crew, and/or Ship is second to none! Come to develop your leadership skills, learn to be a valued mentor to other Scouts with whom you work, and meet new friends, too.

Choose one of the following classes:

*  Senior Patrol Leader Training

*  Den Chief PLUS Training

*  Venture Leader Training

*  Sea Scout Leader Training

* OA Classes (Open Only To Current OA Members):

Training is offered at no cost for in-council Scouts who register by October 31st, as part of the program fee paid at recharter. A fee applies for: out-of-council Scouts, any Scouts registering on November 1st or later (walk-in registrations, as well), and lunch (optional). 

  • Materials. Both Den Chief and SPL classes require participants to have a book specific to their roles. Please bring your copy to class.  NOTE: you may purchase a copy during registration; these will be delivered to your class.
  • Lunch. Participants may bring a lunch or choose to purchase lunch (buffet) in advance when registering online. Note that lunches are NOT available to be purchased on site.  
  • Complimentary coffee, hot water for tea, and bug juice are provided throughout the day. 
  • A Snack Shack will be available to purchase snacks, soda, and bottled water during break times. Bring extra money for this.  
  • Training Academy Patches are available for purchase during registration and distributed at Training Academy. Quantities are limited, so do not wait. We cannot guarantee we will have additional stock for sale at Training Academy.

YOUTH CLASSES OFFERED

 

SPLChoice #1: SENIOR PATROL LEADER TRAINING

Senior Patrol Leader Training is open to any Scout First Class and above who is either a Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), Assistant Patrol Leader (ASPL) – or aspires to be in this leadership role in the future.

This supplemental training introduces current SPLs and ASPLs – and those who aspire to these positions – to the “nuts and bolts” of troop operations in their units. The syllabus draws from existing training materials for SPLs as well as other sources. It is supplemental and not designed to replace any existing training. At this training, you’ll learn:

  • How to Run a Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) Meeting
  • Nuts and Bolts of a Troop Meeting
  • How to Lead Games
  • Communication
  • How to Plan and Run a Troop Event
  • Working with Adult Leaders

Bring the Senior Patrol Leader Handbook (for purchase at the Scout Shops in St. Charles and Naperville), paper, pencil, and your Scout Spirit. Wear your full uniform. The Senior Patrol Leader Handbook is required for this classIf you purchase a copy during registration, it will be delivered to your class.

Choice #2: DEN CHIEF PLUS TRAINING

NEW THIS YEAR! We're pleased to announce a three-class track that will encompass a full day of training:  Den Chief, Outdoor Ethics Guide, and High Adventure: Customizing Your Way To Amazing Experiences
 

Class #1.  Den Chief Training is for Scouts BSA members who want to help Cub Scout Den Leaders with their dens. This is a recognized leadership position for Scouts. This course will provide Scouts with skills they need to be effective in this position to help younger Scouts – and it’s a lot of FUN! They will learn songs, games, and crafts to share with their dens and resource materials and information.

Bring the Den Chief Handbook (for purchase at the Scout Shops in St. Charles and Naperville), pencil, paper, an enthusiastic attitude, and wear their FULL SCOUT uniform. Attendance for the entire session is required to be considered trained and to earn the “TRAINED” patch. The Den Chief Handbook is required for this class. If you purchase a copy during registration, it will be delivered to your class. 

Class #2.  Outdoor Ethics Guide.  Were you aware that the Outdoor Ethics Guide is a leadership position in your Troop? Learn how you can assume this role and guide your Troop through planning and conducting an outdoor program that emphasizes effectively practicing the principles of outdoor ethics.  As a guide, you'll help Scouts improve their outdoor ethics decision-making skills to minimize impacts as they participate in outdoor activities. You will also learn how to support Scouts who are working to complete the relevant requirements for their Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks.

Class #3.  High Adventure: Customizing Your Way To Amazing Experiences will help you plan campouts that do not have that "same ole'" feeling every time! We'll teach you how to put together a great High Adventure for your Troop.  You'll also learn how to pick a summer camp or plan and train for a high adventure from older Scouts who have done it.

Choice #3: VENTURE LEADER TRAINING

Get trained on what every Venturer needs to know! This set of classes is for youth and taught by youth, and is open to all Venturing youth (ages 14-20), especially those in leadership positions. Both classes are required for rank advancement.  Basic training offered here in one fun-filled day includes: 

  • Time Management and Goal Setting. This portion of the class provides a fun, interactive learning experience in learning time management  Completing this training module will fulfills the Venturing Discovery Award requirement for the goal setting-time management training course.
  • Mentoring.  Youth must take this class before they can teach it!  Learn how to mentor peers and younger youth as you strengthen your leadership skills while having a positive impact on the learning of others!  

Bring paper, pencil, and your Scout Spirit. Wear your full uniform.

Choice #4: SEA SCOUT YOUTH LEADER TRAINING

Get trained on what every Sea Scout needs to know! This set of classes is for youth and taught by youth, and is open to all Sea Scout youth (ages 14-20), especially those in leadership positions. Both classes are required for rank advancement. Basic training offered here in one fun-filled day includes: 

  • ILSS (Introduction To Leadership Skills For Ships). The course is specific to Sea Scouts and shares a common lexicon with Boy Scout training, aligning with the new Troop Leadership Training (TLT). The goals of ILSS are to give youth a clearer picture of how their positions fits in the ship, help youth understand how they make a difference, and give youth additional tools and ideas for their role as leader.
  • Mentoring. Learn how to mentor peers and younger youth as you strengthen your leadership skills while having a positive impact on the learning of others! 

Bring paper, pencil, and your Scout Spirit. Wear your full uniform.

Choice #5: OA ELANGOMAT / OA REPRESENTATIVE YOUTH LEADER TRAINING

Are you trying to find a way to get involved in the OA? We have good news! The new Elangomat/OA rep training will provide a quality full-day course teaching you how to perform in two of the most important positions in Scouting's National Honor Society. Learn how you can give back to your community and unit by taking this course led by our lodge leaders.

An Elangomat guides others on their journey to join the OA. Learn how you can help guide others, help activate new members into the Order, and get involved in one of the biggest committees in Lowaneu Allanque Lodge.

An OA Representative is a unit's main line of contact with the OA. Learn how you can better support your unit with the programs, training, and more that the OA offers. An OA rep is also a troop guide; learn how to help guide Scouts in your unit to becoming their very best!

Prerequisite:  Youth must be a current OA member to take this training.

Choice #6: OA LODGE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (LLD) YOUTH (AND ADULT) LEADER TRAINING

Have you already taken ILST/ILSC and NYLT and are looking for a new type of leadership training, or are you looking at getting involved in an OA leadership position? Look no further! This year Lowaneu Allanque is making our LLD more accessible than ever, providing a quality leadership experience that you can’t get from just any other training. Learn how our lodge is structured, how to get involved, and how to lead your unit to greatness with a syllabus specially designed for our area by the national organization of the Order of the Arrow. This class has content for both youth and adults.
