KI: 2018 JOTA - Russell Woods Forest Preserve
Hey world, let’s get together for a chat.
The 2018 Jamboree-on-the-Air and Jamboree-on-the-Internet, empowering Scouts and Venturers to communicate with other Scouts from around the world, will be Oct. 19-21, 2018.
Add the weekend of Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) and/or Jamboree-on-the-Internet (JOTI) fun to your unit, district or council calendar.
Just how big of a deal are JOTA and JOTI? Consider this: The World Scout Bureau reported that the 2017 JOTA and JOTI events had more than 1.5 million Scout participants from more than 160 countries.
In addition to talking to Scouts from other countries, participants complete requirements for Cub Scout adventures, Boy Scout merit badges and the International Spirit Award. All that, plus JOTA and JOTI offer a hands-on lesson in STEM — the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
What: Annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, across the country and in your own community. This event could not happen without the tireless support of local volunteer ham radio operators who are members of the Kishwaukee Amateur Radio Club (KARC). Food services will be provided by Boy Scout Troop 33, DeKalb, IL.
When: Third full weekend of October (this year it’s Oct. 19-21, 2018). The Kishwaukee District/Three Fires Council/BSA will be holding this event Oct. 20-21. Check-in/Camp setup will take place Saturday, October 20 from Noon -1:00 pm near Shelter #3 at Russell Woods Forest Preserve. Program areas begin at 2:00 pm sharp!
Camp tear-down will take place Sunday, October 21 from 1:00 - 2:00 pm.
Where: Russell Woods Forest Preserve (11750 State Route 72, Genoa, IL 60135). Outdoor camping for participants, leaders & family members will be near Shelter #3. Program areas will be inside Shelter #2 & #3 and outside with mobile ham radios.
Who: Boy Scouts, Venturers, Tiger Cubs and Webelos Scouts, plus their families and leaders.
Each Webelos Scout camps with their parent or guardian. Boy Scouts/Venture Scouts need to have at least one leader from their unit camp overnight. Tiger Cubs are welcome to attend JOTA 2018 on Sunday, October 21 between 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. All Boy Scout/Venturer/Webelos participants who camp overnight are required to submit a BSA Annual Health & Medical Record (Parts A&B) at check-in at Noon on Saturday, October 20.
Tiger Cubs and their family members/leaders may join others for lunch at Russell Woods Forest Preserve between Noon - 1:00 pm at $5/person. Meal tickets will be available at the Troop 33 meal wagon.
Cost: $20/person. This covers 3 meals (Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast & lunch-Plates/cups/napkins/utensils provided). It also covers Shelters #2 & #3 rental fees and miscellaneous administrative costs. Tiger Cubs who attend on Sunday, October 21 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm are FREE! $5/person/meal for breakfast and/or lunch is optional.
