Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos 

Course #1:

Outdoor Leader Skills for the Boy Scout Outdoor Program 

Required for: Scoutmasters/Ass’t.Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches and Crew Advisers

Recommended for: Troop and Crew Committee Members, Charter Org. Reps., Webelos Leaders, Cubmasters/ Assistant Cubmasters and Pack Committee Members interested in learning basic outdoor camping skills for the Boy Scout Program.

This course will satisfy the requirements for all Scoutmasters/ Assistant Scoutmasters to be certified as “Trained” in Outdoor Leader Skills.  This course is designed as an introductory course.  It is recommended for those wishing to take Wood Badge training.

IOLS Course Description:

Emphasis will be placed upon learning the following skills:

  • Campsite Selection; Basics;Older Scout to Younger Scout Communication 
  • Leave No Trace Camping; Outdoor Ethics;Outdoor Code; Tread Lightly!
  • Ropes: Whipping, Tying & Lashing;
  • Woods Tools: Knife, Camp Saw, and Axe;Tips; Cleaning;Sharpening;Safety
  • Finding Your Way: Map & Compass Reading;
  • Plant Identification; Native and Poisonous species
  • Animal Identification;Tracking;Identification
  • Fires Site  Selection  &  Building;  Equipment; Campfires;Safety
  • Cooking;  Equipment; Meals; Storage; Clean-up
  • Backpacking &  Hiking Techniques: Right Gear; Packs & Footwear; Safety
  • Note: Webelos Den overnighters require a leader that has completed a different course (OLS-W: see Course #2 registration below) in order to be in attendance at an overnighter.

  • Attendance is mandatory both days to be trained!

Course #2: 

OLS-W ; Outdoor Leader Skills for the Webelos Overnight Program

Required for: Webelos Leaders and Cubmasters/Ass't. Cubmasters

Recommended for:Pack Committee Members, Charter Org. Reps., and Anyone interested in learning basic outdoor camping skills.

OLS-W Course Description:

All of the Boy Scout Curriculum will be covered (above listing) ......

PLUS Webelos portion:

  • 4 Activity Pins Helps,
  • How To Plan a Webelos Campout,
  • Flag Ceremonies
  • Webelos To Scout Transition Planning

Date/location for OLS-W:

  • 5:00 PM, Fri., Aug.18th to 8:00 PM, Sat., Aug.19th, 2017
  • Same course as above Plus additional 3 hours for Webelos content
  • Attendance is mandatory both days to be trained!
  • Training will be complete for both IOLS and OLS-W courses.  ( 2 courses in one!)
