BSA Outdoor Ethics Guide Course

This 4-hour course introduces participants to the principles of outdoor ethics and provides them with a framework for helping others – Scouts and leaders – improve their outdoor ethics decision-making skills to help minimize impacts as they participate in outdoor activities.

Boys Scouts, Venturers, Varsity Scouts, and Adults are encouraged to attend this course as an introduction to the BSA Outdoor Ethics Program. Those who complete the course should be better prepared to:

  •  Develop skills to instruct the Outdoor Ethics skills and information for Boy Scout rank advancement requirements with outdoor ethics elements;
  •  Serve in the Outdoor Ethics Guide youth position of responsibility;
  •  Guide unit leaders and youth in the principles of Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly as they apply to the Outdoor Code and Outdoor Ethics in Scouting.

Course content includes:

  •  BSA Outdoor Ethics Program overview
  • The Outdoor Code
  • Leave No Trace Principles
  • Tread Lightly! Principles
  • The Land Ethic and Stewardship
  • "Teach What You Learned"
  • Boy Scout program outdoor ethics components
    • rank advancement;
    • Outdoor Ethics Guide position of responsibility;
    • outdoor ethics awards

Several relevant outdoor ethics activities will be a part of course instruction. Course participants will also be given an opportunity to "Teach What You Learned" in a brief presentation, skit, or activity. Participants will be given time and guidance during the course to prepare for and carry out the "Teach What You Learned" portion of the course.

Completion of the Leave No Trace Online Awareness Course and Tread Lightly! 101 Online Awareness Course is required prior to attending this training course. Please bring copies of completion certificates with you to the course.
