The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America. Its induction process is designed to be a period of self-reflection, service, and personal growth.
The journey consists of two primary stages of induction: the Ordeal (becoming a member) and Brotherhood (sealing one's membership).
1. The Ordeal
The Ordeal is the first step in the OA. After being elected by their peers, candidates attend an Ordeal weekend that is a series of four challenges designed to teach the value of self-denial and service.
The Four Challenges
- A Night Alone: Candidates sleep apart from others, under the stars (or a small shelter), to encourage self-reliance and reflection.
- A Day of Silence: From sunrise to sunset, candidates remain silent. This forces a focus on internal thoughts and the environment rather than social distraction.
- A Day of Work: Candidates spend the day performing manual labor to improve the camp or community, illustrating "cheerful service."
- Small Rations: Meals are sparse and simple, teaching the candidate to appreciate what they have and to practice self-discipline.
The Ceremony
At the conclusion, candidates participate in a formal ceremony where the legends of the OA are shared. They receive their Ordeal Sash (white with a red arrow) and are officially recognized as members.
2. Brotherhood Membership
Brotherhood is the second "level" of membership. Unlike the Ordeal, where you are elected, Brotherhood is a choice made by the individual. After 6 months of active service as an Ordeal member, a Scout or Scouter is eligible to "seal" their membership.
Requirements for Brotherhood
- Active Service: Demonstrating a commitment to their unit and the OA lodge.
- Memorization: Learning the OA Obligation, the Order’s song, and the "Admonition."
- The Letter: Writing a letter to the Lodge Secretary explaining what the OA means to them and how they plan to continue serving.
- The Brotherhood Hike: A symbolic walk with other candidates where the history and deeper meanings of the Ordeal are discussed.
The Significance
Becoming a Brotherhood member signifies that the individual has moved past the "testing" phase and is now fully committed to the ideals of the Order. The member receives a new sash—that features red bars above and below the arrow.
