Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Training

IOLS – Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is a training course that provides leaders with basic skills and information to run a successful outdoor program.  It is required of all Scoutmasters and Asst Scoutmasters. Other Scouting America Leaders are welcome to take this training.

Leaders will learn the necessary basic skills in helping scouts work towards earning the First Class Rank. The course will cover fire building, using wood tools, hiking, packing for a trip, where to setup a tent, map and compass, knots, lashings, cooking, first aid and other skills.

Each leader, as required by the program, will sleep overnight in their tent and get the full camping experience. This is an outdoor overnight camping event. Participants need to bring their own tent and camping equipment.

  • Cooking Techniques using wood and other fuels
  • Safe camp sanitation
  • Working with wood tools-knives and axes
  • Planning a campfire program
  • How not to get lost by using a compass

  • Working with ropes and knots
  • Techniques for hiking
  • Packing what to take and leave home
  • Nature identification
  • Leave No Trace Camping

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Registered leaders of Troops and Crews who participate with their unit’s outdoor program:

  • SCOUTMASTERS & ASSISTANTS are required to complete this course in order to complete the training required for their position.
  • TROOP COMMITTEE MEMBERS planning to participate with your troop's camping program; the course is highly recommended or may be required by your troop. 
  • VENTURING ADVISORS & ASSISTANTS using high adventure or camping programs are encouraged to complete this course.

  • Camp Ehrhorn Saturday, May 16  - Sunday, May 17, 2026

Pre-Requisites for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters: S24 Scoutmaster/ Assistant Scoutmaster Specific Training. (This is not required for other Scouting America leader positions)

Cost $50     NO WALK INS

A minimum of 5 participants needed to run this course.

TEXT BOOK--The current edition of the Scouts BSA Handbook is required for the course. 

BSA MEDICAL--BSA Medical Forms A & B must be brought (see attachments)

SCOUTER CODE OF CONDUCT - A signed copy must be brought (see attachments)
