Event Details

Outdoor Leader Training Weekend

BALOO & Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills

November 7-8, 2026
Camp Maluhia, Maui

Be the Best Trained Leader You Can Be!

Come spend a night at Camp Maluhia with fellow adult leaders!

Enjoy a weekend of camping, hands-on learning, good food, and time with other Scouters while building the skills and confidence to bring even better outdoor adventures back to your Scouts.

Maui is bringing two important Scouting America outdoor leader training courses together for one special weekend at Camp Maluhia!

Whether you serve our youngest Scouts in a Cub Scout pack or are helping Scouts develop the outdoor skills that carry them toward First Class and beyond, trained leaders help create stronger, safer, and more exciting Scouting programs.

Participants will select either BALOO or IOLS when registering. These are separate training courses being offered at the same location and during the same weekend.

BALOO

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation

BALOO provides Cub Scout leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to confidently lead outdoor experiences for their packs.

BALOO training includes two components: an online component and a practical, hands-on overnight component. Both must be completed to qualify as a trained Cub Scout outdoor leader.

Who Should Attend?

Cub Scout leaders who help plan, lead, or participate in their pack's outdoor and camping program are strongly encouraged to attend.

BALOO training is especially important for packs planning overnight camping experiences because a BALOO-trained adult leader must be present for qualifying Cub Scout pack overnight camping activities.

What Will You Learn?

  • Planning and preparing for Cub Scout outdoor activities
  • Camping equipment and campsite selection
  • Outdoor cooking
  • Campfire planning
  • Health, safety, and sanitation
  • Basic outdoor skills
  • Age-appropriate Cub Scout outdoor programming
  • Leave No Trace principles

BALOO Prerequisite

The BALOO online training component must be completed before attending the practical course.

The online training is available through the Scouting America Learn Center at my.scouting.org.

IOLS

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills

IOLS provides adult leaders with the practical outdoor skills needed to support a successful troop outdoor program.

The course introduces leaders to many of the basic outdoor skills Scouts learn while working toward First Class rank. Participants learn by doing and spend the weekend practicing these skills in an outdoor camping environment.

Who Should Attend?

  • Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters who need IOLS to complete the training requirements for their position
  • Troop Committee Members who participate in or support their troop's outdoor program
  • Venturing Advisors and Assistant Advisors involved in camping or high-adventure programs
  • Other registered Scouting America leaders who would like to strengthen their outdoor skills

What Will You Learn?

  • Setting up camp
  • Menu planning and outdoor cooking
  • Safe camp sanitation
  • Knife, axe, and wood-tool skills
  • Campfire planning
  • Map and compass skills
  • Ropes, knots, and lashings
  • Hiking techniques
  • Trip planning and packing
  • Nature identification
  • Leave No Trace principles
  • Basic outdoor first aid skills

IOLS Prerequisite

Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters should complete Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training as part of completing the training requirements for their position.

This prerequisite does not apply to participants serving in other Scouting America positions.
