The application period for 2027 Scoutreach High Adventure Treks is in progress! Your Scout could be hiking breathtaking vistas at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico or living amongst the diverse sea life of the Florida Keys at Sea Base.
High Adventure Treks are unique opportunities for Scouts to test their many skills and explore their limits under the guidance of trained professionals. Learn more about what each trek has to offer below.
SEA BASE - June 6 - June 11, 2027
Keys Adventure Islamorada! Keys Adventure Islamorada will show you the variety of experiences the Florida Keys has to offer. This adventure combines all the elements of our most popular multi-adventures. Your crew will snorkel, paddle through mangrove forests, fish in the Florida Bay from 28ft. fishing vessels, and spend a day sailing aboard our own catamaran sailboat! Each day is a new day, and each night will be spent in air-conditioned dormitories. If you’re looking for an action-packed variety of aquatic activities, look no further. This adventure is a part of our COASTS program and is special needs accessible.
PHILMONT SCOUT RANCH - June 24 - July 3, 2027
9-day Trek! Philmont Scout Ranch is the Scouts’ largest National High Adventure Base with dozens of camps scattered across rugged terrain that ranges in elevation from 6,500 to 12,441 feet. Philmont offers an unforgettable 9-day trek of backpacking adventure with programs that feature the best of the Old West—horseback riding, burro packing, gold panning, and chuckwagon dinners. It’s an unbeatable recipe for fast-paced fun in the outdoors.
Youth Applicant Rules
Scouts who have participated in previous High Adventure Treks through the Atlanta Area Council are not eligible for selection and should not apply. Youth that meet the following requirements are eligible to apply:
1. Current member in Scouting America and registered with an Atlanta Area Council Troop.
2. Cannot have not attended a High Adventure Base before.
3. Scouts must be at least 14 years of age or 13 and have completed the 8th grade prior to their arrival at Philmont High Adventure Base or 13 for Sea Base.
4. Scouts cannot be older than 17 years of age prior to their arrival at High Adventure Base.
5. Scouts must be available for an in-person interview with the High Adventure Trek Committee (to be scheduled in January 2027)
6. Scouts must meet the height and weight guidelines listed in the Scouting America Medical Form for High Adventure. Verification of height and weight will be checked at the time of interview and again 60 days prior to the trip departure date.
7. Provide a signed copy of the Scouting America Medical form, parts A, B1 and B2 prior to November 30, 2026.
8. Provide a copy of Part C of the Scouting America Medical form, prior to the crews’ first overnight campout. (Copies must be within a year of the date of the overnight trip).
9. Submit a creative typed 500-word essay about your Scouting journey
10. Ask your Scoutmaster to complete the recommendation form found on our website on your behalf.
11 SEA BASE APPLICANTS ONLY: Pass the Scouting America Swim Test as a swimmer. Tests will be scheduled by the Atlanta Area Council.
12. Submit a $25 application fee. If the Scout is not chosen to attend in 2027, this fee will be refunded.
13. Selected Scouts will be assessed an additional fee of $275 due by May 15, 2027; all other costs will be covered by the Atlanta Area Council (Transportation, and additional camp fees). Certain Items, such as clothing, snacks for traveling) are not provided.
*Note: ALL requirements of this application must be met before an Interview will be granted.
Adult Applicant Rules
Who is eligible to apply? Adults 21 years of age or older who meet the following additional requirements:
1. Must be a registered Adult Leader with the Scouting America. Merit Badge Counselor does not count.
2. Be available for an in-person interview upon acceptance of application (to be scheduled in October 2026).
3. Meet the Scouting America High Adventure Base requirements to attend a High Adventure Base (Training Certifications*, age, weight, and medical clearance). Applicants will not be considered if they are 25 or more pounds over the published weight for the applicant's height.
4. Provide a signed copy of the Scouting America Medical form, parts A, B1 and B2 prior to November 30, 2026.
5. Provide a signed, current, and complete Scouting America Medical Form (Part C) for the applicable High Adventure Base prior to the Philmont Crews 1st overnight campout (usually beginning in February).
6. Be available to schedule and commit to attending leaders’ meetings and prep activities (typically 4 day hikes and 2-3 overnight/weekend crew shakedowns in February-May) leading up to the trek.
7. Be available to communicate with the High Adventure Trek Committee and other leaders within 24 hours of any correspondence (periods of travel for business excluded, however prior notification requested).
8. ALL Applicants must have current Safeguarding Youth Training, Wilderness First Aid Training, CPR Training, and any other required training courses listed in the application. If all of the training courses listed are not held or current, the applicants must be available and willing to take any and all necessary certifications prior to departure. Costs incurred with this training will be paid for by the Atlanta Area Council, provided they are taken with the Council.(The Atlanta Area Council provides opportunities for this training). Any training not taken through the Atlanta Area Council will become the responsibility of the applicant.
9. A $300 fee will be accessed to all leaders, due no later than May 15, 2027. This fee helps cover the cost of attendance at the High Adventure Base. The remaining fees, along with Transportation (Flight and Ground), including any overnight accommodations required for travel will be paid for by the Atlanta Area Council.
