Chainsaw Safety & Certification

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

This course meets the training standard for chainsaw use on Scouting America outings and service projects. Participants who complete both classroom and field sessions receive a certification card valid for 2 years.

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) selection and fit
  • Chainsaw anatomy, chain tensioning, and bar maintenance
  • Safe starting, carrying, and fueling procedures
  • Kickback hazards and the safety zone around an operator
  • Proper felling, limbing, and bucking technique
  • Basic chain sharpening and blade care
  • First aid considerations specific to chainsaw injuries
  • Written and hands-on skills evaluation

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Open to registered Adult Scouters aged 21 or older. No prior chainsaw experience required. Class size is limited to 12 participants to allow individual field instruction.

BRING WITH YOU
Your own chainsaw with an appropriate sharpening file, plus full PPE: chaps, hard hat, safety glasses or face shield, gloves, leather boots, and hearing protection. Also bring a copy of your BSA medical form (Parts A & B). Lunch is provided.
