Event Details

Spring 2020 NYLT Pack & Paddle

Be one of the first Scouts in Tampa to take NYLT in the Pack and Paddle Format!  Learn leadership skills while paddling down the Peace River over Spring Break.  It's a training and high adventure experience rolled into 6 incredible days.

Note - A swim test will be required of all participants and staff; to be completed on day 1 of the course. Participants must be able to paddle a canoe, hike, and comfortably carry a loaded backpack.

YOU WILL RECEIVE A FREE LONG SLEEVE SHIRT WITH REGISTRATION.

National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops or crews, and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he or she must KNOW, and what he or she must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the Scouts and Venturers go on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership. National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a coed six-day course, staffed primarily by youth NYLT alumni.

Classes are held in an outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster. Please note: the BSA-created curriculum includes a realistic simulation of a first aid event. Scouts should Be Prepared to learn how to provide aid in a real-life situation.

In order to attend a NYLT course, a youth must have the following qualifications by the beginning of the course:

  • Must be a registered member of a Scouting unit.
  • Must have a current BSA Health and Medical Record form parts A, B, and C.
  • Scouts BSA members must be at least 13 and First Class in Rank.
  • Venturers and Sea Scouts (male and female) must be at least 14, or 13 and have completed eighth grade, and fall within the maximum age allowance for their program.
  • It is recommended that they have had at least one year of camping experience.
  • Have a unit leader recommendation.

NYLT is sponsored by the GTBAC Training Committee. Participants from GTBAC are welcome. Out-of-council participants are asked to contact course director Billy McCracken prior to registering.
