Become a part of the team that helps deliver shooting sports to our Scouts!  

A current NRA instructor who is on the Council Approved Shooting Sports Instriuctor list and current NRA Range Safety Officers (RSO)s are required for a unit to open a shooting sports range at a council property.   For more details visit: https://tampabayscouting.org/camps/camp-facilities-usage.  

Knowing how to shoot is an important requirement for NRA instructors, but you will also need to know how to teach others to shoot. NRA Instructor Training Courses help you develop the additional knowledge, skills and attitude needed to organize and teach others.  

All participants must agree to assist the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council, or their home council, by staffing at least 2 Council or District shooting sports events per year for the next 2 years.   

To become an NRA instructor, you must complete the following:

• Basic Rifle and Shotgun Instruction
• Basic Instructor Training (B.I.T) and Range Safety Officer Training (RSO)
• Rifle and Shotgun Qualifications 
• Rifle and Shotgun Instructor Training

You must successfully complete EVERY session of this series to become an NRA instructor.

Session Information:

Location: Sand Hill Scout Reservation

Time: Friday 7:00 PM - Sunday 4:30 PM 

Cost: $350 for GTBAC Scouters, $400 for out of council Scouters.  Registration cost goes up by $25 after April 7.
Includes all course materials and supplies, overnight camping space and meals during the trainings.

NRA RSO and BIT Training - May 14-16, 2021
(requires completion of Basic Rifle and Shotgun Instruction)

NRA Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun Qualification - May 21-23, 2021
(you must qualify for accuracy on rifle and shotgun)

NRA Rifle and Shotgun Instructor Training - June 4-6, 2021
(requires completion of Basic Rifle and Shotgun Instruction, NRA RSO and BIT Training and qualification in rifle and shotgun)

NRA Pistol Basic and Pistol Instructor Training

Important Notes:

• Registration deadline is two weeks before each course.  No walkups allowed.
• Course size is limited, so register early to guarantee your space
• All participants must be currently registered with the BSA
• All firearms and ammunition are provided.  You may NOT bring your own firearms.
• NRA Instructor Certification fees (currently $30 members/$50 non-members) are paid directly to the NRA via their online site by the candidate.  NRA membership is recommended but not required.

COVID Information

Council event attendees, including participants and staff, are required to comply with the Council's current COVID protocols. Failure to do so will result in removal from Council properties and/or events and forfeiture of event registration fees.

All participants must submit a pre-medical event checklist and waiver upon entry, All participants will be health screened upon entry.

All Participants must bring a current BSA Medical form (download here).
