Training Weekend

Multiple trainings will be offered. Please see the descriptions of each training being offered listed below.

IOLS is 3 days 2 nights, BALOO is 2 days one night, and ILST is one day no overnight.

Trainings Offered

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) – Is a one-and-a-half-day course designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities.

  • BSA’s Cub Scout level camping policies will be taught along with the discovery of the necessary tools to help units carry out a successful camping experience.
  • BALOO training consists of an online pre-requisite component and an overnight practical hands-on component.
  • Completion of this course is mandatory for a MINIMUM OF ONE adult on a Pack or Webelos den overnighter.
  • The online component must be completed prior to attending the practical component; bring the online component completion certicate to the practical component training.
  • Go to my.scouting.org training site to take the online training portion.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) – is a one-and-a-half-day hands-on course providing adult leaders with the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors.

  • Participants will learn first-hand about selecting a campsite, pitching a tent, hiking, outdoor cooking, first aid and leave-no-trace principles.
  • Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First-Class rank.
  • In conjunction with Scoutmaster Position Specifics training, this course is required for all direct contact leaders registered in Scouts BSA Troops in order to be considered “trained”.

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST)

The purpose of the ILST course is to teach Scouts with leadership positions about their new roles and how to reach success most effectively in that role. It is intended to help Scouts in leadership positions within their troop understand their responsibilities and to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities.

  • ILST is the first course in the series of leadership training offered to Scouts and is a replacement for Troop Leadership Training.
  • Completion of ILST is a prerequisite for Scouts to participate in the more advanced leadership courses National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT).

All participants of either course must bring a current copy of the BSA Annual Health Medical Form Parts A & B.
