What is BALOO Training?

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) training is an essential course for any Cub Scout parent or leader interested in organizing and participating in overnight camping trips. It’s designed to equip adults with the knowledge and skills they need to safely and confidently guide Cub Scouts in outdoor activities. The training includes both online modules and an in-person, hands-on session that covers everything from campfire planning and outdoor cooking to first aid and nature awareness. BALOO is required for at least one adult on every Cub Scout overnight outing, but is reccommended that all parents have this most basic outdoor training, ensuring all camping experiences are fun, safe, and Scout-appropriate.

How BALOO Helps Your Kids

When parents complete BALOO training, they become empowered to create memorable outdoor adventures that directly benefit their children. Scouts thrive in the outdoors, and having trained adults means the kids can enjoy well-planned, enriching experiences in nature. These adventures help Cub Scouts build confidence, independence, and a deeper appreciation for the environment. Your child will feel a greater sense of security and pride knowing that their parent is actively involved and qualified to help lead the pack. And you will more confidnet that you and and them are having safe experiences.

How BALOO Helps the Den

A den with BALOO-trained adults can go further—literally and figuratively. Trained parents make it easier for the den to plan and execute camping trips, which strengthens the group’s camaraderie, fosters leadership, and enhances the overall program. It also distributes responsibilities more evenly among leaders, reducing burnout and making participation more enjoyable for everyone. Your involvement can inspire other parents to step up and contribute, creating a stronger, more vibrant scouting community.

Sample Activities You’ll Learn to Lead with BALOO Training:

·         Campfire storytelling and skits

·         Outdoor cooking and meal planning

·         Fire safety rules and best practices

·         Basic first aid and emergency preparedness

·         Nature hikes and environmental games

·         Tent setup and campsite organization

·         Flag ceremonies and Scout traditions

And, it is a lot of fun. A night with other Cub parents will help you realize you and your Scout are part of the greater Scouting family, and we all wisdom to share. And it's Free!

To attend this session, you MUST complete the current Youth Protection training; contact your Cubmaster if you have questions on how to do so.
