Scouterhorn Operations Training 2025
INCENTIVE OFFER:
The following applies to people (volunteers and staff) whose training is current (or who have completed the on-line training and only need the hands-on assessment to be fully trained) and help operate the Scouterhorn for Council events such as Family Camps and Merit Badge Specialty weeks.
- Each volunteer earns $50 per half-day credit that can be applied to their District's future rental.
- The volunteer may specify which District benefits from their service.
- Volunteers may not use their service to reduce rental for their unit.
- Minimum base rental fee for the Scouterhorn is $100. Thus, Districts may not entirely substitute service for fee.

This activity is the hands-on assessment for setting up, operating, and taking down the Scouterhorn; NCAC's Spectrum Sports "Drop-A-Rock" 24' mobile climbing tower.
Be sure to follow the steps for getting trained at https://www.magi-inc.com/Scouterhorn_COPE_COFFFEE-TEA prior to the class. Please finish the on-line training at least a couple days before the hands-on session. You will be expected to know all the material by the end of the session.
For example, you will be expected to have read the current guide for setting up, operating, and taking down the Scouterhorn (Scouterhorn-Setup_Operations_Takedown-20241018.pdf) and the gear check list (updated on 2022-09-10). [Current versions of all guides are on a Google Drive (click here for access).]
When you operate within your training, your participants will have a fun, challenging, and safe experience and you will not likely need to document a near-miss or incident.
What's in this for you? When you support a climbing event, there's a nearly 100% likelihood that at least one person, adult or youth, will come up to you with a big smile and thank you for the fun time. Not everyone will overcome their fear of falling, but there's also a good chance someone will. And you will be the one who helped them gain self-confidence by overcoming fear.
If you don't see a session that works for you, send an email to NCAC.COPE@gmail.com with dates that would work, number of people requesting the training, and contact information for the requester. If the training is for an event, please include the name, location, and date of that event. If the Scouterhorn and trainer are available, we can add a training event. The location of the training might change if the Scouterhorn is rented. You will be notified if that happens.
Please keep checking since new sessions will be added.
When training is at Camp Snyder, please check in at the administration building (the Hylton Center) by the entrance of 6100 Antioch Rd, Haymarket, VA.
Please join us in helping Scouts (and parents) learn about climbing!
