Council Pinewood Derby & STEM Expo

Event Details

The June event is canceled and will be rescheduled in fall 2022.

Race your car in a Council Pinewood Derby Championship race and explore a wide-range of STEM stations at Camp Snyder on June 4, 2022!

The NCAC STEM Committee (and friends!) will host a myriad of stations targeted to Cub Scouts to include robotics, chemistry and physics.

The Championship race welcomes: winners of a NCAC District championship of the last 2.5 years (2020 - 2022). Didn't place in a district race, but want to compete in the Council Championship? Great! We have a track for you too! Select your choice of race upon registration.

$15/youth or adult to be in the Council PWD. The registration fee includes racing and competing for design awards, a CWBS STEM participation patch, and maybe a really cool award depending on how fast your car is/its' design! :)

$30/youth joining STEM expo. The registration fee includes participation in the full event of STEM stations, a CWBS STEM participation patch, and maybe a really cool award depending on how fast your car is/its' design! :)

  • Youth will be assigned to dens to rotate thru the STEM stations from 10am - 12pm and 2:15 - 3pm.
  • If racing a car, you're on between 12-2pm. The Council PWD Championship (for NCAC district winners of last 2.5 years) will run first, followed by the General Championship race (for any scout, scouter or friend who wants to race a car).  We'll let you know what your estimated '30 min window' is so you can have front-row seats to your car's race! Use the rest of this block to eat lunch with your family or wander thru a midway of STEM demonstrations.
  • Note: older youth or adults who just want to race in the General Championship race, but who will not participate in the STEM stations may register to race a car for $15. Same goes for Cub scouts who just wish to race in the Qualifying or Open race but who do not wish to participate in the STEM stations, the fee is $15. Please register accordingly!

Rules of the Race: See attachment on the right for detailed rules of the Council Pinewood Derby Championship.

Can I build a new car?: Yes! The scout advances, not the car. Meaning, if you're participating in the Council PWD Championship race as a district winner, you can build a new car!

What if I didn't win in a district race before? You can join us in the general race! Perhaps your district didn't have a PWD in the last couple years, perhaps you're no longer a Cub Scout (maybe a few or more than a few years have passed since you were Cub age...) everyone is welcome to enter a car! We will offer speed and design awards for participants in the general race.

Covid Guidance: We will follow all Council and local government guidance for covid mitigation. Details will be provided via email by mid-May.

May I just race in the PWD and skip the STEM Expo? Yes.

May I just participate in the STEM Expo rotations and skip the PWD? Yes.

I can't be there, can I send my car? Yes! Proxy racing is possible. Please mail drop-off your car to the NCAC HQ between May 15 - 27.

Since we're going to be at Snyder all day... can we camp overnight? Sure! Campsites are available for rent - please email to book your overnight experience.
