Event Details

This Geology STEM event is sponsored by Professor Nord, Professor Goldspiel and The GMU Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Earth Sciences.  This event is a great springboard into BSA Geology and STEM awards.

This event will take place at Exploratory Hall, George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. 

 

Event Description
The STEM Program consists of 2.5 hour sessions, and welcomes all girl and boy youth from 3rd to 5th grade. The programs are structured around the Scout Awards delineated below, however same-age siblings are most welcome to attend, so feel free to register! Each session includes a guided tour of the GMU Physical Geology and Paleontology labs

There is a $18 fee per youth attendee. Please see to the right to register for the appropriate class. There is currently availability in the sessions beginnng at 10AM and at 12:15PM.  

 

Saturday - Program Structure

Sessions sizes are limited to 16 Youth per session. Participants will rotate through classrooms wherein they will accomplish requirements 1 and 3-8 of Earth Rocks and requirements 2-5 of Nova Down and Dirty. Youth will visit both the paleontology and physical sciences microscope labs during their session. 

Can youth other than Scouts participate': Yes, this program is great for boy and girl youth from 3rd - 5th grade. Scouts, non Scouts, same-age siblings and friends are welcome to participate but should register for their grade appropriate sessions. Please contact stem@ncacbsa.org if you have any questions. 

Directions and Parking:

  • Only handicapped parking is permitted next to Exploratory Hall or the HUB.
  • The Shenandoah River Parking Garage is adjacent to Exploratory Hall, and is paid parking. 
    Please see GMU's visitor parking webpage for details. 

Please arrive at registration (Exploratory Hall periodic table lobby) at least 5 minutes prior to your session; and plan for another 15 to 20 minutes to park in Lot A, and walk up through campus to Exploratory Hall.
