GMU Chemistry Workshops

Event Details

The George Mason University Chemistry Club developed a workshop for scouts to visit their Chem Labs on campus, and to experience the world of chemistry with a number of interactive activities! 

This event will take place at Exploratory Hall, George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. 


Event Description
The STEM Program welcomes all girl and boy youth from grades 4-12. The program will begin in the Periodic Table Lobby of Exploratory Hall at GMU and end in the Chem Labs of Planetary Hall. 

For youth in grades 4-5:

  • There are two sessions for you to choose from! Starting at 12:30pm or 1:30pm. 
  • GMU's Chemistry Club will open with a safety brief, then lead 2 interactive experiments and conduct 2 exciting chemistry demonstrations! Come join us! There is a fee of $16/youth to cover the cost of materials. 
     

For youth in grades 6&up::

  • There is one session, beginning at 2:30pm.
  • In this class, GMU's Chemistry Club & Professors will lead youth through the lab activities and discussions so Scouts BSA may earn the Chemistry Merit Badge! The only pre-requisite is requirement 4a (can also be done as a post-requisite). 


What to Bring:

  • Wear close-toed shoes
  • Hairtie for long hair
  • Safety goggles (if you have them - we will have extras too!

Uniform:

  • Youth may wear Class A/B uniforms (and yes, STEM Scouts can wear their Lab Coats!) but this is not necessary. 


Can youth other than Scouts participate: Yes, this program is great for boy and girl youth from 4th - 12th grade. Scouts, non Scouts, same-age siblings and friends are welcome to participate and should register for their grade appropriate sessions. Please contact stem@ncacbsa.org if you have any questions. 

Directions and Parking:

  • Only handicapped parking is permitted next to Exploratory Hall or the HUB.
  • The Shenandoah River Parking Garage is adjacent to Exploratory Hall. 

Please arrive at registration (Exploratory Hall periodic table lobby) at least 5 minutes prior to your session; and plan for another 15 to 20 minutes to park in Lot A, and walk up through campus to Exploratory Hall.
