Dog Show, Dog Care Merit Badge Opportunity

Event Details

Volunteer to support a dog show and work towards the Dog Care Merit Badge.

Scouts are invited to spend 6 hours (one either May 17 or 18) at the Kennel Club of Anne Arundel All Breed Dog Shows at the Howard County Fairgrounds (2210 Fairgrounds Rd, West Friendship, MD 21794). The show will be held indoors.

Scouts should arrive by 9 am and plan to depart at 3 pm. Lunch will be provided (Scouters, parents or others providing rides are welcome to stay and enjoy the show and lunch).

Scouts will support the show in various roles, such as hospitality for judges, serving as ring stewards in the 4-6 month puppy classes, helping with ring setup and running the timer for Rally competitions, and assisting with health clinics.

In addition to earning six service hours towards rank advancement or school requirements, Scouts will meet many requirements for the Dog Care Merit Badge. The organizer will be happy to continue to serve as counselor for Scouts who wish to complete the merit badge.

Note that Dog Care Merit Badge requirements have been updated for 2025.

Scouts will complete requirements 1, 2, and 10.

Counselor will arrange another meeting at an animal shelter or veterinarian’s office to complete requirements 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9 in the DC Metro area.

Scouts must work on their own to complete 4 (2 months of caring for a dog) and 5 (training and demonstrating obedience commands)
