STEM Speaker Series Feb 2025
Overview:
The STEM Speaker Series is a way for you to learn about exciting STEM careers! The conversations will be held on Teams. This is a continuation of a successful series NCAC STEM started during the pandemic. Attendees will have an opportunity to join a Q&A with each of our guests.
Upcoming Event:
February 20th: Landing on the Roof
Kurt Yankaskas was a test and development engineer working for the US Navy. The presentation is about noise on ships and how it is treated in ship design, engineering and operations. His specialty is acoustic engineering. This is a story of his adventures in this work and how he became became involved in ship design. His talk provides examples of ship design and insights on how the US Navy helps around the world in emergencies and other events.
His discussion is about the testing and design of an aircraft carrier. An aircraft carrier is really a small town with an airport on top. The airport is 4 ½ acres with a control tower. And under the flight deck (runways) are the sleeping quarters, kitchens and machinery. The airport is capable of launching and landing aircraft simultaneously He shows how the flight deck works and some of the design features installed. He developed a 3-D CAD software program that accurately predicts the noise environment on any naval craft. This tool can then be used to design optimal noise control treatments and approaches. For example, recent acoustic holography measurements on an aircraft carrier identified flight operation noise paths throughout the ship’s spaces. Exciting aspects of his work include being on the flight deck within feet of jet take-offs and landings. He shows some of the designs he completed for the USS RONALD REAGAN ((CVN 76) and USS GERALD FORD (CVN 77). Mr. Yankaskas also had the honor of working with the Blue Angels in a special project through these efforts.
