Merit Badge Counselor Orientation And MBC Training for Citizenship in Society

Event Details

We are offering both the Merit Badge Counselor Orientation (D76) (morning) and Merit Badge Counselor Training specifically for Citizenship in Society Merit Badge (afternoon.)

To become a Merit Badge (MB) Counselor:
Merit badge counselors must register as adult Scouters and be approved by the Council advancement committee for each merit badge listed on the Merit Badge Counselor Information form. A merit badge counselor must submit the merit badge registration fee if not already registered elsewhere in the Scouting America (BSA) as a leader. Merit Badge Counselor must complete the Adult Application for position code 42, fully complete the MB form, complete Scouting America (BSA) Youth Protection Training (YPT), and submit your YPT completion certificate. Submit the Adult Application with the Merit Badge Counselor Information form and fee to your Council. Counselors may wish to associate with a particular unit but are encouraged to serve any Scout from any unit.

Schedule:
8:00 AM - Check in for the morning class
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM - Merit Badge Counselor Orientation & training card (D76)
11:30 AM - Check In for the afternoon class
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM - Citizenship in Society Merit Badge Training & card stating you attend the training

Park in the lower Epworth parking lot behind the church only and enter thru the front entrance (off Rosemont Dr)

Requirements needed to become a Citizenship in Society Merit Badge Counselor:

Citizenship in Society Merit Badge Counselor Qualifications
National Capital Area Council Advancement and Recognition Committee

Counselors are required to: 

  1. Be a registered merit badge counselor (Code 42)
  2. Complete Youth Protection Training
  3. Complete on-line MBC Training or equivalent in-class D76 training if not already completed.
    • Current on-line courses are: SCO 471, 472, 474, 486
  4. Complete Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) on-line training (SCO 1800) - use your online certificate for proof
  5. Attend Council and/or District Citizenship in Society training. (Use today's card for proof - this is not a coded course)
  6. Review the Scouting America (BSA) counselor facilitation guide including resources.  
  7. Provide list of training (received or taught) or work/research experience in any of the following:
    • Diversity, equity, and inclusion training for vocation
    • Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor with the federal, state, or local government
    • Disability awareness training and/or hidden disabilities training
    • Discrimination and anti-bias training
    • Military / DoD gender equity training
    • Public or private sector human resource department
    • Elementary, secondary, or high school guidance counselor
    • Teaching or researching in affiliated sociology domain.
  8. Provide DEI-related life experiences, such as working through an outreach organization or a church; the experience should be specifically focused on working with youth, using mentoring skills, or facilitating challenging discussions.
  9. Be available to openly communicate with the Scout’s parent(s)/guardian(s) if questions or discussions require their assistance.
