STEM Speaker Series

Overview:
The STEM Speaker Series is a way for you to learn about exciting STEM careers! The conversations will be held on Teams. This is a continuation of a successful series NCAC STEM started during the pandemic. Attendees will have an opportunity to join a Q&A with each of our guests.

November 13: Meteorology Night with Ryan Miller
Ryan Miller: Emmy Award-winning meteorologist Ryan Miller is a part of NBC Washington’s Storm Team 4. He's had experience forecasting some of the bigger storms to impact the D.C. area over the past 19 years. Coupled with his forecasting and broadcasting duties, Ryan is science teacher in the Arlington Public School System, providing instruction in courses related to high-school and college-level Earth and Environmental Science, Physics, Astronomy, and GIS Mapping at Washington-Liberty High School.
His love of all thing’s meteorology began at a very early age growing up in Northeastern Ohio; he began his broadcast meteorology career as a weather producer for WJLA ABC-7 and was host of the nationally syndicated show, Outside the Classroom. Ryan has a B.S. from Penn State University, a M.A. from Virginia Tech, and an Ed.S. from George Washington University. He has also taken graduate level meteorology courses through the USDA Graduate School broadcast meteorology program, is a full member of the American Meteorological Society, and a certified National Geographic Educator.

December 11: Geology Night with Cate Larsen
Cate Larsen, B.S. Geology, is a geo-communicator utilizing the connective power of the internet to bring geology education to the masses. Her background as a geologist and passion for teaching come together and drive her to share her knowledge with the world on social media like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
“Mars is over 100 MILLION miles away, so how do scientists study it and learn so much about it? Come learn about things like rovers, orbiters, and places here on Earth that help us understand Mars’ geology and piece together its history.
