NCAC STEM: Cooking and Astronomy Merit Badges

Event Overview

NCAC STEM is hosting an event for Scouts BSA to earn the Cooking and Astronomy merit badges! 

They will host 2 sessions (an AM Cooking class and a PM Astronomy class) at Camp William B. Snyder, Haymarket, VA. You may sign up for one or both classes. 

Who can attend? Scouts BSA and friends ages 11-18. Sign-up a friend!



Class Overview

All of the classes balance instruction with hands-on time so the youth can gain practical experience with Cooking and Astronomy.

Event Schedule:  
Morning session (Cooking) is 9 AM - 2 PM; Afternoon session (Astronomy) is 3 PM to 9 PM

COOKING

The STEM program will highlight the Science of Cooking and the workshop will include demonstrations on knife skills, meal presentation, and Dutch oven cooking as well as other basic cooking skills. A tin foil lunch and Dutch oven dessert will be prepared during the workshop. Adults are welcome to stay and learn as well!

Prerequisites: Scouts should complete requirement 2c, 4a, 5a, 5b,  6a, 6b prior to the workshop. It is recommended each Scout obtain and read a copy of the Cooking Merit badge book prior to the workshop.

Workshop:  Will cover requirements 1, 2, 3, 4b, 5c, 5h, 6c, and 7.

Requirements 4c,4d, 4e, 5d, 5e, 5f, 5g, 6d, 6e, and 6f can either be completed prior to the or after the workshop in coordination with the counselor.

ASTRONOMY

The STEM program will allow Scouts BSA members to earn the Astronomy Merit Badge.  Weather depending, the workshop will also include observing the Moon, several constellations, and other space objects.

Prerequisites: Scouts should complete requirements 5B, 6B and 9 prior to the workshop, as these will only be discussed during the workshop. It is recommended each Scout obtain and read a copy of the Astronomy Merit badge book.

What to bring: A “bag lunch” for a quick dinner!

Uniforms: SBSA may wear Class A uniform.

  • pencil
  • merit badge book
  • water bottle/snacks

Directions and Parking: Camp William B. Snyder is located at 6100 Antioch Road, Haymarket, VA 20169. See attached map for directions to Sally’s STEM Shack. Parking is available to the right of the building.

Registration Fee: Cooking: Early Bird registration (deadline October 4th), $50; Regular registration (deadline October 10th), $55; Late registration (deadline October 12th), $60.

                            Astronomy: Early Bird registration (deadline October 4th), $25; Regular registration (deadline October 10th), $30; Late registration (deadline October 12th), $35.

Merit Badge Completion/Follow-Up/What to Expect: Blue cards will be provided.
