Colonial District Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) & Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
Saturday, June 17 beginning at 10:30 a.m. to Sunday, June 18 at 3:30 p.m.

Note that there will be no separate classroom session; only the overnight session at Gunston Hall.

 

Colonial will offer a BALOO and IOLS training for both Cub and Scouts BSA leaders in June.

WHO:  Cub Scouters, WEBELOS Leaders, Arrow of Light Leaders, Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Crew Advisors, Associate Crew Advisors who need to complete their program-specific training requirements, as well as those other adult volunteers who want to help with the outdoor program activities and basic advancement skills. Order of preference:  Colonial District, Virginia Central, NCAC; request for deviation, contact Dominick Caridi.

WHAT:  Instruction designed to hone outdoor skills will use the Den and Patrol methods. It will focus on safety & risk, unit structure, event planning, camping, Scout craft skills, Outdoor Ethics, and outdoor cooking. Partially fulfills the training requirements for Cub Scouters, WEBELOS Leaders, Arrow of Light Leaders, Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, Venture Crew Advisor, and Assistant Venture Crew Advisor positions.

WHEN: Weekend Session starts at 10:30 am, Saturday, June 17, and runs through 3:30 pm, Sunday, June 18, at Gunston Hall, Lorton VA

COURSE FEE:  

The fee for the course registration is $45.00, payable in two phases:

  • $25.00 to cover course costs to be paid at on-line registration
  • A fee of $20 payable on-site to cover food and other expendables). 

Participants are asked to bring this $20.00 in cash (small denominations)
The final cost shall be based on the actual purchase prices and the number of course participants.

Note there are prerequisites for the IOLS and BALOO courses!

All participants must have current YPT certification.

FOR BALOO Certification:

Complete the Safety Modules:

  • Hazardous Weather
  • Safety Afloat
  • Safe Swim Defense

Complete the BALOO Modules:

  • Introduction to Cub Scout Outdoor Program v2 – 5 mins.
  • Pack Camping Program – 8 mins.
  • Planning Your Event – 5 mins.
  • Planning Your Cub Scout Outdoor Event v2 – 17 mins.

FOR IOLS Certification:

  • Current certification in Hazardous Weather
  • We strongly urge that you take this opportunity to update all the Safety Modules, especially:
    • Safety Afloat
    • Safe Swim Defense

These trainings are all available online at my.scouting.org under the "My Training" tab.

Participants must provide documentation of completing the online courses. This can be done by presenting the certificates provided upon course completion OR providing other documentation that you have already completed the courses and hold current certifications.

OTHER REQUIRED PAPERWORK:
All participants must complete the BSA-Medical-Form-A&B (no physician’s signature is required). This Medical form should be brought to the campout; do not email. NO PAPERWORK = NO TRAINING
