1) What should I bring?
Rubber-soled shoes with closed toe and heel (NO flip flops or water sandals), rain jacket and/or sweatshirt, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, and sunglasses. Scouts must ‘Be Prepared’ as it could be hot or cool on the water depending on weather conditions.
2) What about medical forms?
Bring up-to-date BSA Medical Form (Parts A & B) for each Scout attending. You will need to turn in a copy of the form to the adult-in-charge of the event, so be sure to keep the original for your own records. No Scout will be allowed to participate without the current Medical form on file.
3) What if it rains that weekend and what about COVID?
The event will be held rain or shine. If weather conditions are unsafe for sailing, other activities will be done on land until the weather conditions improve. All Guide to Safe Scouting requirements will be followed. State, local, and BSA COVID-19 protocols will be followed that are in-place at the time of the event. In the unlikely event that the workshop is cancelled due to severe weather conditions, the payment will be refunded. A rainproof jacket is a must.
4) Can my Scout come on one day and earn one of the Merit Badges?
No. Activities from each of the three merit badges are covered on both of the days, so if a Scout attends just one day they will have completed only part of each of these 3 merit badges. This is because we will have some Scouts out on-the-water while other Scouts are doing land activities at the same times to make the best use of all our seven sailboats and give each Scout, BSA the best sailing experience.
5) Will my Scout actually get to sail?
Yes, they will spend a great deal of time on-the-water, in one of our five 19’ Flying Scot sailboats that weekend. There will be very experienced Sea Scout sailors on every boat as their Sailing Instructors, but the Scouts attending the Merit Badges Afloat event will be allowed, and eventually expected, to handle their assigned boat.
6) Can the adults attending, sail as well?
No, unfortunately we must limit this event to Scouts only due to the number of sailboats we own and will have available for our use; but you are more than welcome to stay and take a 1,000 Kodak picture moments.
7) What are the overall qualifications of the adults-in-charge?
Our adult leaders have hundreds of hours of combined sailing experience. They are certified Boys Scouts of America National Camping School Aquatics Instructors and American Red Cross Waterfront & Pool Lifeguard and Wilderness First Aid Instructors. Also, many of the older Sea Scouts are sailing instructors for youth camps, are certified Lifeguards, and have CPR/AED qualifications.
7) What should I do to get ready?
Work with your local troop to get your blue cards for the three merit badges, look over the requirements for the three merit badges, and complete all of the prerequisites.
