BASIC ADULT LEADER OUTDOOR ORIENTATION (BALOO) (C32)
Welcome to BALOO training!  It is the Cub Scout leader training required for any Cub Scout Pack overnighters and Webelos Den overnighters. 

Seneca District is offering BALOO training on May 4-5

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
This is the BALOO Training that was rescheduled from April 6-7 (due to severe weather) to May 4-5.

The Seneca event is almost full.  White Oak District is offering BALOO on May 5-6 in Purcellville, VA.  Click here to see their registration site.   White Oak registration closes on 5/3 at midnight.

PRE-REGISTRATION Required!                 
NO WALK-INS 
Registration closes Thursday, May 3rd - Registration is filling quickly.

When:
Friday May 4 through Saturday May 5.  
Arrive Friday by 5:00 PM.  (Eat dinner before arriving.)
Leave Saturday at 5:30 PM.

Who May Attend:
This event is being hosted by Seneca District.  Attendance is open to all districts.

$35

Program:
We will be covering the BALOO basics (Pack overnighters) and the extensions for Webelos Leaders (Webelos Den overnighters.)

Camping:
You will be camping Friday night.  See the equipment section below for a packing list. The entire event is outdoors!!!

Campfire:
We will be teaching campfire planning and actually having a campfire to practice at.  One aspect of our campfire is an “Ashes Ceremony”.  An Ashes Ceremony is explained here.  So, what is the “lineage” of our ashes?  Here is a description from Howard who will be supplying the ashes for our ceremony:

“My collection of ashes go back to the very creation.  No, not that one. The creation of Scouting. The lineage has campfires with Baden Powell and his wife present, campfires from over 20 countries, most of the US states, ashes from the howitzer shot off at Ronald Ragan’s funeral, and much more. The collection even went to the moon and back on an Apollo Mission.”

From intersection of Great Seneca Hwy and Muddy Branch Rd travel North on Muddy Branch 0.8 mile. IWLA is on the left (requires U-Turn).

Prerequisites:
Youth Protection Training
Online BALOO modules (take all 8 - SCO_250 - SCO_257 - about 1 hour)
Hazardous Weather Training (about 30 minutes)

Required for Water Outings:
Safe Swim Defense (about 30 minutes)
Safety Afloat

How to Access Prerequisites/Water Outings:
To access the last 4 classes - go to my.scouting.org and log on.
- Click on BSA Learn Center (right side red block) - That opens a new tab
- Scroll down to Expanded Learning
     - Click on BALOO for the Online BALOO modules
     - Click on Program Safety for the last 3 classes
- For each of the two - click on Add Plan (Expect a green success banner)
- Click on the class title
- Select Launch Course for each desired module above
- When finished with each course wait for the music to finish
- To get to the next course hit the back arrow - top right side
KEY: When finished with each course wait for the music to finish and wait to see the Scouting U , Learning, Challenge, Lead Image before you hit the back arrow to take the next course.

Claiming Credit for Prerequisites:
When completed all 8 BALOO online modules:
At the bottom of the page where all 8 courses are listed you will see on the bottom right side View Certificate. Click on it and print your certificate
and bring it to the outdoor training to show that you have taken the prerequisite(Part 1). Without this prerequisite you can not be fully trained. You will also need this for the back ground of the outdoor (Part 2) course.

Uniforming:
This is a uniformed event, if you have one wear it.

Equipment to bring:
The entire event is outdoors!!!
Shelter: tent and ground tarp
Sleep system:  sleeping bag or blankets, pad, pillow?  If you don’t have a sleeping pad (foam or inflatable) a few extra blankets can be folded to make a pad.
Flashlight
Rain gear
Closed toe shoes - no sandals
Warm clothes (check the weather forecast)
Minimal toiletries. (Tooth brush etc)
Pen/paper
Eating utensils (plate or bowl, knife/fork/spoon, cup)
Water bottle
Chair (very important for your comfort!)
For preparing foil lunches:
- Paring knife
- Veggie peeler

Available on site:
Potable water
Toilets
Pavilion (in case of severe weather)

Meals:
Friday - eat dinner before you arrive
Friday evening - Cracker Barrel (Boy Scout bedtime snack)
Saturday breakfast will be simple but filling (coffee etc available)
Saturday lunch will be foil dinners (you prepare and cook over charcoal)

We will be supplying the food.  If you have food allergies make sure to note them on your registration.

What if I don’t know how to set up my tent?
No worries mate.  Bring it (make sure you have all the parts) and we will teach you how to pitch it.

How will the weekend start?
When you arrive you will pitch your tent and set up your camp.  Staff will be available to help/instruct.  We will start staff introductions and discuss campsite selection and how to plan a campfire. Later in the evening we’ll have the campfire to practice.  We will end the evening with Cracker Barrel (Boy Scout bedtime snack).  The in-between parts of Friday night and all day Saturday will be other classes on pretty much everything you need to camp with Cubs.

Will we be camping?  Yes, we will be camping.
