Race your car in the Council Pinewood Derby races on May 16, 2026!

The National Capital Area Council welcomes all Cub Scouts to this year's race. Didn't place in your district's Derby? Not a problem! ALL Cub Scouts are welcome on the 16th!!

Race Rules  

The race rules are in the attachment to the right. Please read them! They include limits on individual parts, banned materials (NO LEAD!), etc.

In general -if it came out of the Scouts BSA Pinewod Derby car it, it's ok. If you bought it somewhere else, please check the rules if its allowed. We do not want to disqualify anybody because of a misunderstanding, but we must keep a level playing field for all participants. If you have questions,  contact the race director.

Registration Fee:

$25 per Cub Scout or adult to be in the Council PWD races.

$10 per car entered in the Design Competition ( https://scoutingevent.com/082-114204)

FAQ

How will the races be conducted? Cub Scouts will race against their dens:: Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos,and AOL. There will also be an Outlaw/Adult bracket (all non-Cub Scouts)  Each bracket is limited to 20 cars.We usually proceed in den order, but may alter that if needed,

How will the Design Competition be conducted? Cub Scouts will be judged by a panel of Scout leaders in each of their den levels: Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos,and AOL. Each bracket is limited to 5 cars.

When will awards be presented? Awards will be presented for each brackets after all the races for that bracket have been completed. Overall championship races will be held at the conclusion of the last bracket.

Can parents volunteer to help run the Derby? Certainly!!!! Any adult willing to assist, please annotate in the comments section when your Cub Scout registers. We especvially need help with the weigh-ins and design judging.

Can I check my car beforrehand? The rules provide details on every part of the car. You will find they allow for more flexibility than most district race rules in order to accommodate ALL district rule sets. If you still have questions, contact the race director Jason Kralj and our team will clarify the issue ASAP.

Where will the races be held? In the Springfield Town Center in the Grand Court area – enter thru the Main Entrance that is next to Maggiano’s and Yardhouse and go down the stairs.
