NCAC STEM: Oceanography Merit Badge

Event Overview
NCAC STEM is hosting an event for Scouts BSA to earn the Oceanography Merit Badge on Saturday, April 18.
They will host the event at the STEM Shack at Camp William B. Snyder, Haymarket, VA.
Who can attend? Scouts BSA.
Class Overview
Join us for a fast-paced, hands-on Oceanography Merit Badge workshop! Scouts will explore how oceans work through interactive games, demonstrations, and a live wave laboratory using a professional wave generator.
This is a great opportunity for Scouts interested in STEM, environmental science, maritime careers, and hands-on learning.
Event Schedule
The session will run from 9 AM to 2 PM
Oceanography
What Scouts Will Do
- Build ocean systems and seafloor models
- Simulate ocean currents and density effects
- Explore marine ecosystems and human impact
- Operate prediction challenges using a real wave tank
- Observe wave reflection, refraction, and coastal structures
- Learn about maritime and ocean-related careers
Most badge requirements will be completed during the workshop, including the wave laboratory requirement. Requirements 4, 8 and 9 must be completed prior to the workshop.
Event Requirements and Details
Uniforms: SBSA should wear Class B uniform. Expect to get a little damp from playing with the water.
What to bring with you on April 18th:
- a blue card filled out and signed by the SM
- pencil and notebook
- water bottle and bag lunch
- closed toe shoes
Directions and Parking: Camp William B. Snyder is located at 6100 Antioch Road, Haymarket, VA 20169. See attached map for directions to Sally’s STEM Shack. Parking is available to the right of the building.
Registration Fee: Early Bird registration (deadline April 1), $25; Regular registration (deadline April 11), $30 Late registration (deadline April 16) $35.
