Become your Pack’s Outdoor Leader!

 

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is the essential outdoor skills training for Cub Scout leaders. This hands-on, experiential course hosted by Burke Lake District—updated to align with the 2025 BALOO Curriculum and the latest Cub Scouts program updates—equips you to confidently plan, prepare, and lead safe and fun Cub Scout overnight events.

 

Through practical activities, small-group work, and lively discussion, you’ll learn skills in:

 

Health & Safety

Cooking, Meal Planning, and Sanitation

Campsite Selection & Outdoor Ethics

Basic Knots & Gear Selection

First Aid & Practical Knife Safety

Campfire & Ceremony Planning

Large Group Games

GPS & Nature/Hiking Skills

Program Planning for Cub Scout Campouts

Prerequisites (Required)

 

Before attending, participants must complete:

 

Safeguarding Youth Training (formerly Youth Protection Training)

BALOO Online Prerequisite Training v2

 

Available at My.Scouting.org → Learn Center → Expanded Learning

 

Proof of completion must be shown at check-in.

 

Highly recommended: Position-Specific Training, Hazardous Weather Training, and Safe Swim Defense, and Safety Afloat. These strengthen your readiness and will be referenced throughout the course.

Course Details

 

Check-in: Begins at 8:00am on Saturday (overnight is required)

 

Course ends: No later than 12:00pm on Sunday

 

Cost: $35 (includes Saturday lunch & dinner, cracker barrel, and Sunday breakfast)

 

Location: Camp Snyder, fully outdoors — rain or shine

 

AHMR Requirement: Bring Annual Health & Medical Record Parts A & B (paper copy)

 

The schedule is full and fast-paced to ensure all curriculum requirements are met—please come with a flexible mindset.

What to Bring

 

A full packing list will be emailed to registered participants.

 

At minimum, you will need:

 

Tent, sleeping gear, and a personal mess kit

Weather-appropriate clothing and rain gear

 

If you need to borrow essential gear, let us know—we’ll try to assist.

Working Together

 

BALOO is a team-based experience. Participants will assist with meal preparation, cleanup, and hands-on lessons throughout the course. If you have skills or resources (songs, skits, games, Dutch oven experience), feel free to bring them to share!

Registration

 

Minimum registration is required for the course to run. Participants will receive a detailed email beforehand with schedule, menu, packing list, directions, and parking instructions.
