NCAC Hike-O-Ree

Why

Adventure builds confidence, resilience, and leadership. The NCAC Hike-O-Ree exists to help Scouts develop outdoor skills, challenge themselves in the backcountry, and discover what they are capable of when they work together as a team. Whether preparing for future high-adventure treks or taking a first step into backpacking, the Hike-O-Ree provides an unforgettable experience that strengthens character, teamwork, and self-reliance.

How

For nearly four decades, the Hike-O-Ree has introduced Scouts and Scouters to the fundamentals of backpacking through guided trail experiences in the scenic mountains of Virginia. Participants form trail crews and spend the weekend learning essential outdoor skills while hiking approximately ten-mile routes that range from moderate to strenuous difficulty levels.

To create an authentic backpacking experience, all camping at the event is conducted using backpacking-style equipment only. Scouts are encouraged to bring only what they can carry, cook their own meals outdoors, and experience the challenges and rewards of self-sufficient camping.

The event is open to Scouting America Troops, Venturing Crews, and Sea Scout Ships, providing opportunities for older youth to develop skills, build friendships, and prepare for future outdoor adventures.

What

• The 37th Annual Hike-O-Ree (originally known as V3 for Venturing, Varsity, and Venture) will be held October 22-24, 2027, at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center in Front Royal, Virginia.
• Open to Scouts age 13 and older
• Units must form trail crews of up to 12 participants, including at least two registered adults
• Fifteen unique hiking trails are available, with assignments based on registration preferences
• Trail distances average approximately 10 miles
• Elevation changes range from 1,500 to 2,600 feet
• Participants must comply with the Guide to Safe Scouting and bring a current Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A & B)

Registration

Trail spaces are limited and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. A unit deposit is required by October 1, 2027, to reserve a preferred trail. Once registered and the deposit is received, leaders will receive a confirmation package with detailed trail information and event guidance.
