January 19, 2026: Composite Material MB
Scouts will work directly with our instructors in a makerspace environment, gaining practical experience with modern fabrication techniques while completing all requirements for the Composite Materials Merit Badge.
Activities & Learning:
- Understand what composites are, their history, and how they are used in everyday life and advanced technology.
- Learn the safety procedures required for handling and working with composite materials.
- Mix and cure your own fiberglass or carbon fiber sample project in our lab.
- Discover how composites compare to traditional materials such as metals and plastics through testing and evaluation.
- Explore the environmental impact of composites and learn about proper recycling and disposal methods.
- Tour our fabrication space to see real-world applications of composites in engineering, prototyping, and product design.
Merit Badge Requirements Covered:
- Define composite materials and explain their history and importance.
- Learn about and demonstrate safe practices when working with composites.
- Complete a hands-on project using fiberglass, carbon fiber, or another composite material.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of composites compared to other materials.
- Explore career opportunities related to composite materials.
By the end of the day, Scouts will leave with a project they created, a stronger understanding of composite technology, and the completed requirements for the Composite Materials Merit Badge.
