What is National Youth Leadership Training?
The National Youth Leadership Training course was developed by the Boy Scouts of America to provide local councils with a standardized training course for the youth leadership of its Scouts BSA Troops, Crews, and Ships. This intensive week-long course is designed to parallel and complement the training that adult leaders receive in Wood Badge. Experience has shown that National Youth Leadership Training makes a positive difference in the lives of its graduates and in the operation of the units they lead.
What are the Requirements?
National Youth Leadership Training is not intended to be the initial training each youth leader receives. Each participant will need considerable experience in outdoor living skills, unit leadership, and the maturity to relate to the in-depth concepts presented in the Leadership Skills Area. Although the course is a lot of fun, it is physically and mentally demanding. For these reasons, participants will need to meet the following requirements:
- Minimum Age of 13 with outstanding scout spirit and team-player attitude
- First Class Rank or higher (by Dec 1, 2024) with considerable camping experience, including at least one week of summer camp
- Good physical condition and completed health form
- Scoutmaster & parent recommendation
What is the Course Fee?
The early bird fee is $300 if paid in full by October 1, 2024, at 11:59 pm.
The standard fee is $350 if paid in full after 12:00 am on October 2, 2024.
The course fee for the two-weekend National Youth Leadership Training Course includes all expenses and materials for the entire course. Participants will also receive the following:
- 1 NYLT hoodie and NYLT winter cap
- Participant notebook and training materials
- NYLT-trained strip & certificate
- Meals during the course
- The most amazing leadership experience available for scouts in the Old North State Council
- Memories & friends to last a lifetime
The course fee is the same for in-council and out-of-council units.
A minimum deposit of $100 is due with registration.
The final payment is due by 11:59 pm on December 19, 2024.
Do Scouts attend both sessions?
Yes, Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the training course.
How many Scouts can participate in the course?
The course is limited to 36 Participants.
What is the refund policy for this event?
Due to the requirement to order in advance a large number of course materials, refunds will not be issued after November 28, 2024. However, deposits may be transferred to another Scout within the same Troop. The only exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Professional Adviser for this course and only in the most extreme circumstances.
What if the course needs to be rescheduled due to inclement weather?
Participants and families are asked to hold February 17-19, 2025 (President's Day Weekend) as the winter weather make-up date.
