S11 (Minute Man) is the outdoor leader training for Scouts BSA Leaders.
Specifically, this hands-on program gives adult leaders a practical introduction to the patrol method of a Scout led troop by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors.
In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching methods used in effective and engaging Scouting programs. Hands on participation is the best learning tool, and this course models the techniques used by effective Scoutmasters, Advisors, and other adult leaders in the Scouting program. Attendees will see and experience various aspects of how Scouting works while playing the role of Scouts in a troop.
This is course #S11, a required course for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to earn their “Trained” status.
Many Cub Scouts want to do stuff outdoors, including camping. It’s probably why they joined in the first place! In order for your den or your entire Cub Scout Pack to have an outdoor activity or go camping, you must have someone complete the Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation, also known as “BALOO”, training course.
BALOO Training is made up of two parts: an online course available on My.Scouting.org, and an in-person, hands-on course. You must complete both parts to qualify as a trained outdoor Cub Scout leader. The hands-on course involves camping overnight (after all, that’s what the course is about – camping). You’re going to learn a lot, from cooking to first aid to campfires to hiking to aquatics and much, much more.
