National Youth Leadership Training

Event Details

The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course is an inspiring program, designed to provide youth with communication, planning, and interpersonal skills and experience that they can use in their home units and in other life situations demanding leadership of themselves and others. Participants will be engaged in an outdoors leadership training experience led by their own Scout BSA peers.

NYLT centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

Through classes, games, and outdoor activities, participants will learn and practice:

Communication Skills
Goal Setting
Planning
Problem Solving
Decision Making
Conflict Resolution

Participants learn to use the Leading EDGE and the Teaching EDGE (Explain – Demonstrate – Guide – Enable) by working with their patrols in an exciting and challenging outdoor environment. The course goal is to prepare young men and women to become superior leaders in their troop, crew, district, council, and other organizations they belong to now, and in the future.

In order to attend a NYLT course, a youth must have the following qualifications by the beginning of the course:

Must be a registered member of a Scouting unit.
Must have a current BSA Health and Medical Record form parts A, B, and C.
Scouts BSA members (male and female) must be at least 13 and First Class rank. They must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops.
Venturers and Sea Scouts (male and female) must be at least 14, or 13 and have completed eighth grade, and fall within the maximum age allowance for their program. They must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews or Ships. It is recommended that they have had at least one year of camping experience. While NYLT is not an outdoor skills course, it is important that each participant have basic camping and outdoor cooking experience.
Have a unit leader recommendation.

ONLY 2 participants from units may be registered up until July 1st. After July 1st, registration is first come first serve to any and all participants that meet the participation qualifications.  The maximum number of participants is 80.  Once 80 participants have registered there will be first-on first-off waiting list.

Please note that a registration is for a specific Scout – it is not a “place-holder” for the unit.  If the original registered Scout cannot attend and there is a waiting list, the vacancy will be filled by the top Scout on the waiting list.  If the unit wishes to register a new Scout at that time, the new Scout will be placed at the bottom of the waiting list.

Each registration includes a complimentary hat and two cotton NYLT participant t-shirts are included in the registration at no additional charge.  Scouts will be wearing NYLT t-shirts almost full-time all week and odor can become a problem.  While the shirts can be hand washed at camp, most Scouts will not do that.  NYLT t-shirts made from a wicking fabric can be purchased for an additional $10 each if the Scout prefers a wicking shirt or would just like additional shirts.  Sizes shown are adult male.”

We strongly recommend that the parent complete the registration to ensure all contact information is current.
