BALOO Training – March 15-16, 2025 at Presidio Monterey Scout Lodge 

 

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is a two-day training coursedesigned to equip Cub Scout leaders with the necessary skills to organize and lead a successful Pack or Den overnight campout.

 

BALOO training is required for at least one registered adult leader before a Pack can conduct an overnight camping activity. At least one BALOO-trained leader must be present at any Pack or Den overnight campout.

 

➤ BALOO Training Structure

 

This course consists of two parts:

✔ Step 1: Online Training (must be completed before attending the in-person course)

✔ Step 2: Outdoor Experience (this in-person training at Presidio Monterey Scout Lodge)

 

➤ How to Complete the Online Training

• Log into my.scouting.org and click the BSA Learn Center on the right side of the homepage.

• Select “Expanded Learning”, then choose BALOO to start the online training.

• Alternatively, go to My Dashboard > Training Center > Expanded Learning > BALOO to access the training.

 

➤ Outdoor Training Details

 

➤ Dates: Saturday, March 15 – Sunday, March 16, 2025

➤ Location: Presidio Monterey Scout Lodge, 141 Ewing Rd, Monterey, CA 93940

➤ Check-in: Saturday at 8:00 AM

➤ Training Ends: Sunday by 12:30 PM

 

➤ What to Expect & Packing List

 

This is a hands-on outdoor training, so come prepared to camp rain or shine.

 

✔ Camp setup & equipment selection

✔ Cooking & sanitation

✔ Knife safety & wood tools

✔ Camp Fire Program

 

 Participants Should Bring:

• Tent & sleeping bag (this is an overnight outdoor experience)

• Mess kit (plate, bowl, utensils, and cup for meals)

• Personal camping gear (flashlight, extra socks, toiletries, etc.)

• Appropriate clothing (Monterey can be misty and damp—dress in layers)

• Rain gear (just in case)

 

***Please note: There are no showers available at this location.

 

All meals will be provided:

➤ Saturday: Lunch, Dinner, Cracker Barrel

➤ Sunday: Breakfast

Directions to the Presidio Scout Lodge

Important: No Left Turn Onto Pvt. Bolio Rd from Lighthouse Ave

 

If you are coming from Monterey on Lighthouse Avenue, please follow these directions to reach the Presidio Scout Lodge:

1. After passing through the tunnel, stay in the right lane.

2. Just after the road curves, take the exit onto Foam St. (one-way street).

3. Stay in the left lane.

4. At the first cross street (Reeside Ave), turn left and go one block to Lighthouse Ave.

5. Turn left onto Lighthouse Ave and stay in the right lane.

6. Travel one block and turn right onto Pvt. Bolio Rd.

7. After about 100 feet, turn left into the Scout Lodge parking lot.

 

DO NOT continue to the Guard Gate—you will not be allowed onto the Presidio and will be required to turn around.
