American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (Overnight) at Camp Rancho Alegre
Required Prerequisite Skills Assessment
All candidates must successfully complete the following skills (this will be completed first thing on Friday, June 5):
Swim–Tread–Swim Sequence:
Swim 150 yards (front crawl or breaststroke), immediately tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs, then swim an additional 50 yards.
Timed Brick Retrieval:
Within 1 minute and 40 seconds, swim 20 yards, perform a surface dive to a depth of 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick, resurface, swim 20 yards on your back while holding the brick with both hands, and exit the water without using a ladder.
Important: Participants who are unable to pass the prerequisite swim test will not be able to continue in the course.
Note: Goggles are allowed for the swim–tread–swim sequence but are typically not permitted for the brick retrieval.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive:
American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
First Aid Certification
CPR/AED Certification
All certifications are valid for 2 years.
Online Coursework Requirement
All participants must complete the online portion of the American Red Cross blended learning course prior to the in-person training.
A link will be sent approximately two weeks before the course begins
The online course takes about 6–7 hours to complete
The certification fee is $42 per person, paid directly to the American Red Cross to begin the online training
Eligibility & Expectations
Participants must be 18 years of age or older to register
This is a physically demanding course requiring strong swimming ability, endurance, and the ability to perform rescues
Participants should be in good health and able to participate in strenuous physical activity
Full attendance at all sessions is required to receive certification. Late arrival or early departure may result in not completing the course
Cost & Lodging
$105 per person for meals and lodging at Camp Rancho Alegre
Lodging will be provided in camp dormitories with shower facilities
Schedule
Arrival: No later than 8:00 AM on Friday, June 5 (class begins at 8:30 AM)
Departure: Approximately 5:00 PM on Sunday, June 7

Participants may be eligible for lifeguard positions at Camp Rancho Alegre or other local facilities

This is not an event sponsored by the Los Padres Council. The training is provided by a third party as part of a facility rental agreement at Camp Rancho Alegre.
