BALOO stands for Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation. It’s the introductory training Cub Scout leaders should complete before taking Cub Scouts on an overnight camping trip.
Scouting America requires that Packs have at least one BALOO-trained adult on every Cub Scout den or pack overnight outdoor event. That include pack camping and Webelos patrol overnighters. A BALOO-trained leader should be at any overnighter regardless of whether it is a pack, district or council event.
Having at least two BALOO-trained adults will make your Cub Scout Pack camping experience as awesome as it can be.
BALOO also includes a 35-minute online pre-requisite that is available from my.scouting.org in the BSA Learning Center.
Prerequisite for the course:
SYT- Safeguarding Youth Training (formerly youth protection training)
Online training component- accessed through your My.Scouting.org account.
Annual health medical record parts A and B – will be returned at end of the course
IOLS stands for Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills. IOLS training helps leaders gain confidence in their ability—through hands-on, practical application of skills and proven methods—to influence growth in positive ways to achieve the purposes of Scouting America.
The IOLS course builds and expands on the concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training and provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors.
IOLS is required for all Scoutmasters/Assistant Scoutmasters to be considered Trained for their leadership position. Every Scout needs and deserves trained leaders.
Prerequisite for the course:
SYT- Safeguarding Youth Training (formerly youth protection training)
Annual health medical record parts A and B – will be returned at end of the course
