Event Details

Welcome to OCBSA's Virtual Advancement Merit Badge Series!

Class: Oceanography Merit Badge hosted by Newport Sea Base

Instructors: Zachary Nyquist & Diana Knapstein

Dates: May 4 (Mon),  May 6 (Wed), May 11 (Mon), May 13 (Wed)

Time: 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Due to the workload and research needed to complete this Merit Badge, it's recommended that the Scout is First Class or above.

Description: The oceans cover more than 70 percent of our planet and are the dominant feature of Earth. Wherever you live, the oceans influence the weather, the soil, the air, and the geography of your community. To study the oceans is to study Earth itself. Upon completion of this course, students will understand oceanic environments and the plants and animals that live within them, the characteristics of waves and topography, and be introduced to tools to study these environments. We will study the food chain in Southern California’s Newport Harbor and learn how plankton play a role within it.

Support Us in These Challenging Times

We acknowledge the hardships and stressors that many in our Scouting community are facing today. The Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America will do our best to continue our mission of delivering the Scouting program to youth, even if from a distance. We are providing programs, like this, as a service to our community, our family, at low cost.

If you are in a position to alleviate some financial stress for the Orange County Council, as we face a significant shortfall in excess of $1.5 million due to the closure of our camps like the Newport Sea Base, Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center, Lost Valley, and Oso Lake, during a critical time of our operations, please make a donation on the Contact page.
