Description:
Join us for a fun and hands-on STEM Nova event focused on math in everyday life! The Designed to Crunch module introduces Scouts to how mathematics plays a key role in the world around them—from sports statistics to business and technology. This council-wide program promotes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in an exciting and approachable way, inspiring Scouts to explore future careers in these fields.

This event is open to all currently registered Scouts in troops who have completed the required prerequisites listed below.

Award Focus:
NOVA Award – Designed to Crunch
This module encourages Scouts to explore how math influences their daily lives through engaging discussions, activities, and real-life examples.

Prerequisites (must be completed before attending):

• Movie Reflection
  With your parent’s permission, watch Moneyball or Good Will Hunting. Write down at least two questions about how mathematics influenced the storyline or characters’ decisions.
• Merit Badge Requirement
  Complete at least one of the following merit badges and bring your signed blue card as proof:
  American Business, Chess, Computers, Digital Technology, Drafting, Entrepreneurship, Orienteering, Personal Management, Radio, Signs, Signals & Codes, Surveying, or Weather.
• Sports Comparison Activity
  Choose two athletes who play the same position in a specific sport (e.g., Nolan Ryan and Shohei Ohtani – MLB pitchers) OR two teams in the same league (e.g., Pittsburgh Steelers vs. San Francisco 49ers). Research and compare their performance statistics. Be ready to discuss your findings with the group.

  Bring a calculator or a smartphone with a calculator app.

What to Bring:

• Class B uniform
• Notebook or paper and pen/pencil
• Calculator or calculator app
• Signed blue card (for advancement records)
• Snacks and water
• Comfortable clothes for indoor and active outdoor activities

Cost:

• $20 per Scout
• Note: This fee is non-refundable and does not include the patch or patch device. These can be purchased separately at the Council Scout Shops. The award can be fully completed during the event if all prerequisites are met.
