This year, Pack 919 in La Mirada will host the Pio Pico District Pinewood Derby for Scouts at the pack and troop levels. At the pack level, Scouts will race by den, and at the troop level, Scouts will race in the middle school or high school division. Additionally, we will race the overall fastest Pinewood Derby Cars for the Pack level and for the Troop level. We will also have sibling races and design awards. The cost is $8 per entry, which includes an Official Pinewood Derby Patch.

• Car Check-in: 11 AM on race day
• Races start: 12 PM
• Attire: Class A uniforms

Last, there are some rules for building your car.  If your car does not meet these requirements, it will need to be modified to comply.  The car can not be officially checked in until it passes inspection.  The most critical item is the weight.  For speed, the car should be as heavy as possible without exceeding the maximum weight of 5 ounces.  Weights made specifically for the cars are available at Hobby Lobby and a few other stores.  If you need more information about the weights, please let me know.  Here are the rules:

1. Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.
2. Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
3. Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.
4. Axles, wheels, and body shall be from the materials provided in the kit. Additional wheels can be purchased separately.
5. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
6. No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite or silicone only.
7. The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.
8. The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.
9. No loose materials of any kind are allowed in the car.

We will also have other activities for the scouts to participate in, including a second track for unofficial car racing, similar to past years. So, bring your old cars if you still have them. There will be lunch, snack, and drink options for sale at the concession stand. 

2026 Pinewood Derby Workshop - East Whittier United Methodist Church 
Pack 919 will be hosting two Pinewood Derby Workshops leading up to the event, where you can purchase and build your Official Pinewood Derby Car Kit for $10.
