Fire Safety Merit Badge (CWSC)

Event Details


The Fire Safety Merit Badge is an elective Scouts BSA badge that teaches critical fire prevention, emergency response, and the physics of combustion. It is highly recommended for any Scout interested in emergency services, outdoor safety, or home preparedness.

Core Requirements
To earn the badge, Scouts must master specific knowledge and practical emergency skills: 

  • Emergency Actions: Demonstrate "stop, drop, cover, roll, cover your face, and cool". Explain how to handle clothing fires and how to safely escape a smoke-filled room. 
  • The Science of Fire: Name the four parts of the fire tetrahedron (fuel, oxygen, heat, and chemical chain reaction). Explain how fire grows and how vapors function in combustion. 
  • Home Safety Survey: Conduct an inspection of your home with an adult. Test a smoke alarm, demonstrate its maintenance, and layout what to do if you smell gas or smoke. 
  • Fire Escape Plan: Draw a detailed home escape map, create a drill schedule, and conduct a practice home fire drill. [1]
  • Hazard Prevention: List seasonal fire hazards (such as holiday decorations) and explain how to safely store or discard flammable liquids. 
  • Arson Awareness: Discuss the impact of arson and the role human behavior plays in it.
