Wilderness First Aid Course

Event Details

Wilderness First Aid

This course covers basic wilderness first aid. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) is the assessment of, and treatment given to, an ill or injured person in a remote environment where definitive care by a physician and/or rapid transport is not readily available.  This course goes far beyond what you may know as “first aid.” While it contains substantial medical information and teaches skills required for medical emergencies in the wild, the deeper purpose is to train participants to manage acute situations. The bottom line is this: better decision-making at the incident scene miles from base facilities can save valuable time and human resources. It can save lives, too.

The course is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, treat, and manage medical emergencies and injuries in remote outdoor environments where access to advanced medical care is limited or delayed, covering topics like patient assessment, wound management, spinal injuries, environmental illnesses (heat/cold related), altitude sickness, basic life support, evacuation planning, and proper decision-making in wilderness situations; typically delivered in a hands-on format with scenario-based learning to practice practical application of these skills. The course will also include basic first aid fundamentals, epinephrine auto injectors, and CPR/AED.

The 16-hour course is designed for those participating in scouting high adventure activities such as Philmont and Northern Tier.  Two sessions are required to complete all requirements: a Friday evening and all day Saturday in either April or May.  The registration fee includes certification through Emergency Care and Safety Institute (ECSI), a wilderness first aid manual, field guide, and course supplies. Dress comfortably, bring a jacket, note taking materials, and lunch.  Be prepared for content presentations, demonstrations, and exercises inside and for some scenarios outside.

Attendance does not guarantee certification. Certification will only be awarded to participants who demonstrate the skills learned in the class. Students must attend both parts.
