Join us for a Klondike Derby!

A Klondike Derby is a winter-based camporee. Scouts BSA Troops and Venturing Crews will have the opportunity to camp in snow shelters they build and participate in a series of competitive events.

Schedule:

Saturday:
  • 10:00am - Arrive, setup tents, and build snow shelters
  • 7:00pm - Astronomy (weather permitting)
  • 8:30pm - Cracker Barrel
Sunday:
  • 8:00am - Scouts Own Service
  • 8:45am - Events
  • 1:00pm - Awards Ceremony

Event Notes:

  • Event Format - Camping and competition. Think of it as a "Camporee-on-the-snow"
  • Sleds - Troops/Crews are encouraged to bring a sled for each patrol, built by Scouts, for the sled race. See sled example (with video) at http://scoutdocs.ca/Klondike/Klondike_sled_plans.php
  • Events - Each Troop/Crews is asked to run an event. Typical events include Sled Race, Jumbo Ski, Snowshoe Relay, Spear Throw, Fire Building, Snowball Toss, Ice Rescue, and Hasty Shelter Building. For more information on these and other possible events visit http://terfry.com/klondike/klondike_events.htmlNew Events are Welcome!
  • Food and camping equipment is not provided. Each Troop/Crew needs to bring suitable food and equipment for the overnight. A Troop/Crew First Aid Kit is required.
  • Be Prepared to stay warm in cold/snowy conditions. Troops/Crew are encouraged to have at least one adult who has experience with winter camping attend. If you have questions or concerns about how to be prepared, please contact Davey Warner at davey.warner@scouting.org
  • Leadership Requirements - Each Troop/Crew must have at least 2 adult leaders over the age of 21 with current Youth Protection Training in attendance (girl Troops must have at least one of these leaders be female). If your Troop/Crew is interested in attending but is having trouble meeting these requirements, please contact us so that we can try to get you linked up with another Troop to attend with.
  • Other Requirements - Each individual must have a current BSA Health & Medical Record Parts A and B on hand at the event. One of the Troop's/Crew's adult leaders should keep these for the Troop/Crew.
  • Attendees - This program is for Scouts BSA Troops and Venturing Crews. Webelos may attend on Sunday only (may not camp overnight) if sponsored by an attending Troop. Webelos must have a parent attend with them.
  • Unit Roster - We are not requiring your unit to provide names of each attendee in advance. However, each Troop/Crew is required to bring a roster of attendees that indicates youth and adult to the event and submit it at check-in.
