Safety at Sea 2024
Yerba Buena Island on September 21st
Dear Boatswain & Crew:
Safety @ Sea is a hands-on youth maritime safety program where you will make new friends, launch flares, swim in a survival suit and learn how to guard against water accidents. Please join us at Yerba Buena Island on September 21st. Here’s what to expect:
Hands-On Training: We are proud to offer hands-on training at Safety @ Sea. While things are subject to change, we plan on offering Pipe Patching, Fire Extinguisher Training, Survival Suit Training, Man Overboard Training, Flare Training, Fire Hose Tug of War, and more! Everyone will have the opportunity to participate, and the instructors will make sure everyone gets wet!
First Aid & CPR Training: We have an instructor available for two half-day Red Cross 1st Aid and CPR Classes. We’d like to offer these sessions to Ordinary-ranked scouts who have already attended one or two S@S events and would like to further their advancement. These classes will be $20 extra, and we only have 24 spots so we will fill them on a first come, first served basis. Email seascouts@ggacbsa.org with your scout’s name to secure a spot.
The "Company System": The Safety @ Sea Weekend is planned differently than other Sea Scout events. Ships are put into a "Company" with other Ships to allow for completion of all the training events in eight hours. Ships are to stay with their assigned Company during the events and are to follow their assigned Plan of the Day.
Registration: Online registration is open and will close on September 2nd. All names of participants are due on that date, due to Coast Guard Security measures.
Cost: $40 per person. Cost includes event t-shirt, PPE, & lunch on Saturday.
Driving In: The Coast Guard base has a security checkpoint to enter the base by car. You MUST submit the names of EVERYONE attending when you register. If someone’s name is not on the guest list at the guard gate, they may prevent the car from entering the base until identification and authorization can be obtained. All participants 18+ MUST HAVE a REAL ID.
Code of Conduct: The code of conduct is based on the principles in the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Sea Promise, Guide to Safe Scouting, and common courtesy. We are guests of the United States Coast Guard.
Our goal is to put on a great event for youth. All Ships are required to have at least two adult leaders over 21 present at all times. Youth or adults who engage in un-Scout-like conduct will cause themselves and their Ship to be removed from the event.
Rules & Uniform Requirements for the Safety @ Sea Weekend: BE PREPARED TO GET WET! Nearly all of the events involve lots of water, crews should bring additional Ship uniform parts. Shoes are to be worn at all times. Please help us make a positive impression. Crews are to be in regatta/cruising/class B uniforms during S@S.
Jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, and rings present a safety hazard during the activities, and therefore should not be worn.
We are the guests of the United States Coast Guard and expect youth to be in their proper ship uniform throughout the weekend.
All Scouts Must Be Proper high-adventure Age:
The Safety @ Sea Weekend is a great event to invite Boy Scouts to see the Sea Scouts program in action. This is encouraged. However, to be a participant in the Safety at Sea Weekend, all Sea Scouts must be at least 14 years old or 13 years old AND a graduate of the 8th Grade. This is pursuant to BSA policy and our agreement with the Coast Guard.
For any questions that have not been answered in this letter, please email seascouts@ggacbsa.org
We look forward to seeing you at Safety @ Sea!
