Cub Scout Archery & BB Rifle Rangemaster Training

Event Details

Cub Scout Rangemaster Training

Come get trained to run Cub Scout BB Gun/Slingshot and Archery Ranges at Council and District events. Shooting Sports are a major highlight in a Cub Scout's life and helping them learn a new skill is very gratifying. We hope you will consider getting trained so you can run ranges safely and effectively.

This is a required training for anyone who will be volunteering as a Cub Scout BB Gun/Slingshot and Archery Rangemaster. These Cub Scout Rangemaster Certifications are valid for two years, and participants will be asked to commit to assist with two District or Council events during the time the certification is valid. These events include: District Day Camps, District Camporees; and/or Council/District sponsored Cub Scout Shooting Sports Activities or Cub Camping program events that have a BB gun/slingshort or archery session such a Webeloree or AOL-o-Ree.

No experience required!

Participants need to be registered ScoutsBSA Adult volunteers, have completed SYT and be at least 18 years of age.

NOTE

  • The Cub Scout Archery Rangemaster certificate will NOT let you run a troop / crew level event.  For this you need a USA Archery L1 certificate.  The Cub Scout Archery Rangemaster certificate allows you to run a district/council level archery event for Lions - AOL.
  • The Cub Scout BB Rangemaster certificate ALLOWS YOU to run a BB and slingshot event at the ScoutsBSA troop/crew level.

The Training

You are welcome to sign up for one or both training classes:  Archery Rangemaster (CS31) or BB Rangemaster (CS32).

The Archery class will be held entirely in person from 9 am to Noon on May 30th at Camp Herms in El Cerritto.

The BB class will have a classroom component via Zoom from 7-8:30 pm on May 27th and a hands on session at Camp Herms on May 30th from 12:30 pm to 2:00 p.m. Zoom info will be emailed to you.

Hands-on training at Camp Herms is where you will get familiar with the ranges, equipment and practice operating a range session.

You must attend and complete the applicable classroom and hand-on sessions in order to receive the applicable training certificate.

Camp Herms is located at 1100 James Pl, El Cerrito, CA 94530. Parking is limited, so please carpool.

There is a lunch break between the hands-on sessions. Participants should bring a sack lunch and refillable water bottle.

Camp Herms is notoriously cold, so dress warmly and in layers – even in May!

More about Cub Scout Shooting Sports

Archery and BB gun shooting are restricted to District Day Camps, Cub Scout/Webelos Scout Resident Camps, Council-Managed Family Camping Programs, or to Council activities where there are properly trained supervisors and all standards for BSA shooting sports are enforced. Archery and BB gun shooting are not to be done at the pack level. Archery and BB gun shooting patches and sports pins may only be earned at the camps and activities listed above. These programs are designed to emphasize safety and marksmanship development under the direction of trained range personal using nationally approved instructional method.

Last day to register is May 27, 2026.
