This course is open to all registered Scouts and Scouters. Must be 14 years or older. All adult participants must have current Youth Protection Training (YPT). Please be mindful of you and/or your Scouts’ physical abilities before signing up for this course.

Upon successful completion of the Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor Course, each participant will become a qualified Leave No Trace Trainer. Those who complete the course are equipped to:

● Understand, demonstrate, and teach minimum impact techniques;

● Lead outdoor ethics discussions and help others explore their own personal outdoor ethic; and,

● Conduct Leave No Trace Awareness Workshops and may assist at Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor Courses.

Schedule:  Gear shake-down 1 week prior to course start (time, date & location TBD). Course check-in at 8:00 AM on Saturday at Pima/Dynamite Trailhead. Course runs until noon on Sunday. Participants MUST camp overnight on Saturday and attend all sessions to complete the training.

Course Description: This is a “High Adventure, wilderness bike-packing” course, not a front country course. Bike-packing, with all equipment for 13 miles, setting up dispersed camp in Tonto National Forest, and then riding in the preserve is part of the course. Participants will receive hands-on training in Leave No Trace skills, ethics, and the seven principles in outdoor environments. Other related topics may be discussed. You will present a 10-15 minute Leave No Trace presentation/demonstration, to be coordinated before attendance and presented on Sunday. Leave No Trace Instructor 2 for this course is Scouting America Grand Canyon Council’s Mr. Graham Twaddell, MS.

What to Bring:

  1. Copy of current BSA medical form Parts A & B only (returned upon completion of course), paper & pen.
  2. Bike suitable for bike-packing (mountain or gravel bike, NO E-BIKES PERMITTED WITHOUT MEDICAL DECAL). Bike for trip can be rented from Spur Cross Cycles, $75, 6738 E Cave Creek Rd #3-4, Cave Creek, AZ 85331, text: (480) 256-2453; email: spurcrosscycles@gmail.com
  3. Water bottle and/or hydration pack, camp chair, sunscreen, hat, closed-toe shoes/boots, & flashlight.
  4. Clothing appropriate for weather conditions.
  5. Your personal needs, such as medication.
  6. If you have any food allergies or needs, please communicate.
  7. Personal camping equipment (tent/fly/tarp, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, mess kit, etc.).

What will be provided: Training materials for the course; meals, snacks; tea, coffee, hot chocolate. Opportunity to purchase Leave No Trace Trainer materials and/or activity items may be available at the end of the course.

Recognition: Upon completion of the course, trainers will receive the Leave No Trace Trainer patch and pin, and a course certificate. Scout youth may wear the “Outdoor Ethics Guide” leadership patch, provided by your troop. Scout adults and Venturing members may wear the “Leave No Trace Trainer” strip. These may be available to purchase at the training session.
